Blog Tour: Only A Breath Apart by: Katie McGarry (Review, Excerpt, & Giveaway)

Would you dare to defy destiny? Are our destinies written in stone? Do we become nothing more than the self-fulfilling prophesies of other people's opinions? Or can we dare to become who we believe we were born to be?

“A gorgeous, heartfelt journey of redemption and love” (Wendy Higgins), ONLY A BREATH APART is a young adult contemporary novel from critically acclaimed Katie McGarry. “Haunting, authentic, and ultimately hopeful” (Tammara Webber), order your copy of ONLY A BREATH APART now!

"They say your destiny is carved in stone. But some destinies are meant to be broken.
The only curse Jesse Lachlin believes in is his grandmother’s will: in order to inherit his family farm he must win the approval of his childhood best friend, the girl he froze out his freshman year.
A fortuneteller tells Scarlett she's psychic, but what is real is Scarlett’s father’s controlling attitude and the dark secrets at home. She may be able to escape, but only if she can rely on the one boy who broke her heart.
Each midnight meeting pushes Jesse and Scarlett to confront their secrets and their feelings, but as love blooms, the curse rears its ugly head…"

My Thoughts:

Hands down, this is Katie McGarry’s best book to date.  Just, my gosh, the feelings in this book. It drags the reader through the wringer right alongside Jesse and Scarlett and their pain and love and heartache seeps off the pages and into your soul. I cannot say enough good things about this book. Katie McGarry has a true talent for YA contemporary and here she outshines herself.

I’m going to get personal for a second, which I don’t always do in my reviews, but part of why I loved this book so so much is because teenage Teresa needed this book. And I’m not saying that the things that happened to Jesse/Scarlett happened to me, because that would be a lie, my life was not nearly as difficult, but there are certain aspects and themes and just certain things the characters struggled with that deeply resonated with me. Honestly, I still needed this book and I am so glad to have read it and more importantly I am glad this book exists for teenagers today.

Jesse and Scarlett are both such incredible characters and I love them both with all of my heart. They may seem to live in opposite worlds, but they have both lived very difficult lives. I wanted to reach into this book and hug them both so tightly and then hold their hands and help them find their way in life. But they really didn’t need me; they are both incredibly strong and come so far over the course of the book. I felt like a proud older sister watching them. And speaking of sisters, I adored the relationship between Scarlett and her sister Isabelle.

I always love how Katie McGarry so realistically portrays her characters, especially her adult characters. I mean, first off, I adored Glory, just adored her. But I also love how all of the adults are portrayed with flaws, they are not perfect and they do not make the right choices all the time and sometimes they think they know better when they don’t. And some of these adults are not redeemable in my opinion and are just not good, but then others may not seem that great but are actually people with good hearts who maybe don’t go about things the best way. Adults don’t always have all the answers here, but the good ones will listen and will help and I love that she shows a balance that there are truly terrible people in the world but there are also some really great ones as well.

Only A Breath Apart is a truly fantastic read and is one of those books I know I am going to revisit. I loved watching Jesse and Scarlett grow together again and grow up. This is my favorite book from Katie McGarry to date. She has never let me down yet, but this one was even more special. I cannot recommend this book enough.
Source: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and voluntarily provided a fair and honest review.

My entire body seizes. “You’re supposed to give me a ride home.”
Glory ends the call and offers me an apologetic expression. “I forgot I had a phone meeting. I’ll take you home, after the call, but this will be a lengthy session.”
Meaning I won’t be home by curfew. “Reschedule.”
Glory has a thoughtful look as she approaches me. One that makes me feel like I should run. She leans forward and says in my ear, “You felt something when you saw the Chariot.”
The moment she placed that card on the table I felt as if I had sprinted headfirst into a wall. It was a stunned feeling, as if I were lost in a fog, but I won’t admit that. Not to her, not to anybody.
“You’ve been asleep for a very long time,” she whispers. “It’s time to wake up, Scarlett. There’s a whole word of possibility waiting for you.”
I step back from her because this lady is insane. “I need you to take me home.”
“I can’t, but I’m sure Jesse can lead the way.”
Um…no. I spin on my toes, and I’m out the door, down the stairs and I head east for home. Seconds later, the screen door slams shut again, and there are heavy footfalls on the wooden steps.
“Wait up!” Jesse calls out.
Nope. Not going to happen. I enter the tree line and curse the sky above that there’s no moon. This is the country, which means that besides the fading light from Glory’s house, I’m in complete darkness.
“Scarlett!” Jesse tries again. “Wait!”
But I don’t. I walked this land hundreds of times with Jesse, sometimes by myself so I could find him when I needed a friend. I can do this on my own.
“Let me find you so I can walk you home,” Jesse says.
He’s to my right, and I hurry because I don’t want to be found. My pulse pounds in my ears, and my blood tingles with this need to stay hidden, to stay alone.
Once upon a time, Jesse was my best friend, and then one day he froze me out. He stopped answering the door when I knocked, he ran away when he saw me coming across the field and then when we were forced into the same space on the first day of our freshman year, he humiliated me in front of the entire school.
Jesse Lachlin crushed me, and while I feel sorry for him because his grandmother died, I don’t forgive him for leaving a scar on my soul.
“Dammit, Scarlett, stop being so stubborn.”
My jaw clenches, and it takes an immeasurable amount of self-control to not explain to Jesse in a very loud tone that he’s the biggest jerk I’ve ever met. Doing so will inform him where I’m located, and I need him to leave me alone.
I push forward, faster this time, but then my foot snags on a root. My balance is thrown and my arms swing wildly in the air. I attempt to reach for something to break my fall, but my fingers catch air. The sensation is like the first massive hill of a roller coaster as my stomach lifts, and I brace myself for impact with the ground.
I close my eyes, tense my muscles and I’m caught. Strong, warm arms weave around me from behind and then my back is pressed flush against a solid chest. My heart leaps, and my lungs are robbed of air.
“You okay?” Jesse’s mouth is incredibly close to my ear, and his hot breath tickles my skin. I tremble because of the adrenaline or because of this achingly beautiful intimacy, I don’t know.
“Are you okay?” he asks again, and this time his arms tenderly squeeze me as if he’s offering comfort, as if he honestly cares. It’s been so long since anyone has hugged me that a part of me melts into the embrace as if I’m dry ground welcoming a warm rain.

Gritty and real, Only a Breath Apart is a story of hope conjured from pain, strength drawn from innocence, and love earned from self-respect. Beautiful, poignant, and fierce.” ―Kristen Simmons, critically acclaimed author of the Article 5 series

All Lined Up by Cora Carmack Is On Sale!

In Texas, two things are cherished above all else—football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both.

Dallas Cole loathes football. That's what happens when you spend your whole childhood coming in second to a sport. College is her time to step out of the bleachers, and put the playing field (and the players) in her past.
But life doesn't always go as planned. As if going to the same college as her football star ex wasn’t bad enough, her father, a Texas high school coaching phenom, has decided to make the jump to college ball… as the new head coach at Rusk University. Dallas finds herself in the shadows of her father and football all over again.
Carson McClain is determined to go from second-string quarterback to the starting line-up. He needs the scholarship and the future that football provides. But when a beautiful redhead literally falls into his life, his focus is more than tested. It's obliterated.
Dallas doesn't know Carson is on the team. Carson doesn't know that Dallas is his new coach's daughter.
And neither of them know how to walk away from the attraction they feel.

62 Thoughts I Had While Re-Reading The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas

Release Date: March 4, 2014
from Bloomsbury Childrens
Goodreads | Amazon

"Contains all five novellas.

Celaena Sardothien is Adarlan's most feared assassin. As part of the Assassin's Guild, her allegiance is to her master, Arobynn Hamel, yet Celaena listens to no one and trusts only her fellow killer-for-hire, Sam. In these action-packed novellas - together in one edition for the first time - Celaena embarks on five daring missions. They take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, where she fights to liberate slaves and seeks to avenge the tyrannous. But she is acting against Arobynn's orders and could suffer an unimaginable punishment for such treachery. Will Celaena ever be truly free? Explore the dark underworld of this kick-ass heroine to find out."

My Thoughts:

1. Spoilers for the entire series in this post! I mean it… big spoilers!
2. The Assassin and the Pirate Lord
3. It’s always crazy to me how much was set up early on. Like these were supposed to be novellas to meet Celaena and see her assassin life, but in the first one we meet Rolfe who ends up being a huge part of their victory later.
4. I will forever not get how people say Celaena was so selfish and Aelin wasn’t… this about the girl who almost single handedly destroyed an island to free slaves.
5. Clearly whenever Celaena loves someone she will first start out arguing with them… her and Sam really go at it in this novella.
6. “Intricate pommel shaped like a sea dragons head” so much laid out so early.
7. “Nervous?” “No.” “Me too.” – Sam knew her so well!
8. “Sam couldn’t be so stupid that he'd get himself killed.” – ahh Celaena, showing love in such unconventional ways.
9. Even at 16, Celaena was pretty good at this planning stuff.
10. The Assassin and the Healer
12. Man, how amazing is it that this tiny character from a tiny novella came back to be such a force.
14. Arobynn raised Celaena, but still didn’t know her well enough to know that the moment he punished her for freeing those slaves was the moment he truly lost her.
15. It kills me how long it took Celaena to finally come around to Sam and then how short their time is together.
16. “This girl was wildfire” SUCH FORESHADOWING
17. I love these Yrene and Celaena moments so much more now.
18. Celaena gives Yrene tons of gold to follow her dreams… again I’ll never listen to those who say Celaena was selfish. Being confident in yourself and your abilities is not selfishness.
19. A tug! And Celaena tugged back!
20. “Prayed that somehow years from now Yrene Towers would return to this continent and maybe, just maybe, heal this shattered world a little bit.” OH SHE DOES DON’T WORRY.
21. The Assassin and the Desert
22. You know, back in the early days, she always made a point to think of herself as Celaena Sardothien and did so frequently and with the full name. Almost like she was reminding herself she was Celaena now. In hindsight, it’s an interesting thing to notice.
23. Ahh Ansel.
24. Arobynn is so cruel.
25. And poor Sam… having to watch Arobynn beat Celaena when he loves her.
26. And there we have our quick lesson on Crochans and Ironteeth…  two books before we ever meet Manon.
28. Also- only the greatest warrior could kill a spider and my boy Dorian does!
29. Ansel’s backstory is very good foreshadowing of what is to come for Celaena once she reclaims her identity.
30. Such a mistake sending Celaena to train with the mute master… she saw how much better things could be… altered her perception of how Arobynn has to behave
31. It’s no wonder Celaena has trust issues… every time she trusts someone in her formative years they betray her… Sam is the exception. The fact that she still learns to trust later on is a miracle, but also explains why she never shares her plans fully.
32. The Assassin and the Underworld
33. Arobynn is such a skeeze ball
34. Lysandra!
35. Sam and Celaena *sobs*
36. Sam and the music notes
37. Arobynn gave her gift after gift, but none of them could touch the one Sam got for her.
38. Oh hey there Dorian and Chaol
39. “I have no name. I am whoever the keepers of my fate tell me to be.” Oh man Celaena you don’t know how right you are.
40. I’ll forever love Celaena and Sam and forever be heartbroken over it.
41. Like I love Rowan and know that’s where she was always going, but damn this still breaks my heart because Sam was so good.
42. Lysandra and Celaena kill me here… they could have been such good friends for so long but Arobynn pitted them against one another.
43. Ugh Arobynn is so damn manipulative.
44. “Because I’d pick you.” *sobs*
45. Oh man. That oath… I’m so glad she keeps it. Sam deserves vengeance.
46. Ahh the spider silk… she gave Sam the spider silk *cries forever and ever*
47. This was so cruel of Arobynn… manipulating Celaena into killing someone trying to undermine the King and the slave trade.
48. Gods. Poor Lysandra.
49. I cannot wait for her to kill Arobynn. I. Cant. Wait.
50. The Assassin and the Empire
51. Oh gods. I am not ready for this novella. I’m never ready for this novella.
52. I will say it forever… AROBYNN IS THE WORST
53. Gods this killed me. They were both played so well.
54. But what I love about this series is that Celaena learned from her mistakes. She was played so well here and in previous novellas by Arobynn. But she learned from those mistakes and grew and then she became the one making plans that  knocked everyone on their ass.
55. “My name is Sam Cortland and I will not be afraid.” I love that she carries this with her forever.
56. “She wanted to burn this place into nothing but ashes.” Celaena always keeping her promises.
57. What they do to Sam is so terrible… just… so so terrible.
58. I just wish Celaena had taken her time with Arobynn. He got off easy for what he did. Not just to Sam but to her.
59. Arobynn played a risky game betting the king wouldn’t recognize her for who she really is.
60. The hint of pine and snow.
61. “She would tuck Sam into her heart, a bright light for her to take out when things are darkest.”
62. “My name is Celaena Sardothien and I will not be afraid.”

Wrap Up:
Forever broken by these novellas. I adore them so much but what happens to Sam and Celaena always kills me.
