Book Review: Spectacle (Menagerie #2) by: Rachel Vincent

Release Date: May 30, 2017
from Harlequin MIRA
Goodreads | Amazon

"In this riveting sequel to New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent's acclaimed novel Menagerie, Delilah Marlow will discover that there is no crueler cage than the confines of the human mind…

When their coup of Metzger's Menagerie is discovered, Delilah and her fellow cryptids find their newly won freedom brutally stripped away as they are sold into The Savage Spectacle, a private collection of "exotic wildlife." Specializing in ruthless cryptid cage matches, safari-style creature hunts and living party favors, the Spectacle's owner, Willem Vandekamp, caters to the forbidden fetishes of the wealthy and powerful. At the Spectacle, any wish can be granted—for the right price.

But Vandekamp's closely guarded client list isn't the only secret being kept at the Spectacle. Beneath the beauty and brutality of life in the collection lie much darker truths, and no one is more determined than Delilah to strip the masks from the human monsters and drag all dark things into the light."

My Thoughts:

I’m obsessed. This is easily one of my favorites reads this year. This book is heartbreaking and it’s very heavy at times, but it’s also so good. I love these characters so much and the book is agonizing because I’m worried about them constantly.

Delilah is incredibly. I absolutely love her. She cares so much for others and always puts everyone else first. She’s never willing to leave anyone behind and she does not give up. And I can’t express how much I love Gallagher. He is so wonderful and just so good. He will do anything for Delilah and I love their bond. And Eryx is still wonderful and Romily is so so interesting. I love this world and these characters and I already cannot wait to get back to them.

This book is so heartbreaking. Somehow they wind up in a worse situation than they were during Menagerie. None of these characters have it easy and what they go through is truly horrendous. Humans have an incredible capacity for cruelty. Especially when they convince themselves that someone or something is lesser or unworthy. In so many ways this book parallels things in the real world. We may not have cryptids but we have humans and they can be just as cruel as the villains in this story.

Spectacle is a really amazing read and I had a hard time putting it down. I listened to this one on my bus ride home from work and every day I looked forward to that ride so I could get back to these characters and see what was happening to them. This book is heavy but man oh man is it amazing. I cannot wait to read Fury and see how this all comes to an end.

  1. I don't think I've ever read a Rachel Vincent novel. I always love it when a sequel lives up to all my expectations. I hope the next book is just as impressive as this one.
