Book Review: Contagion (Contagion #1) by: Erin Bowman

Release Date: July 24, 2018
from Harper Teen
Goodreads | Amazon
Source: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via edelweiss and voluntarily provided a fair and honest review.
"Perfect for fans of Madeleine Roux, Jonathan Maberry, and horror films like 28 Days Later and Resident Evil, this pulse-pounding, hair-raising, utterly terrifying novel is the first in a duology from the critically acclaimed author of the Taken trilogy.

After receiving a distress call from a drill team on a distant planet, a skeleton crew is sent into deep space to perform a standard search-and-rescue mission.

When they arrive, they find the planet littered with the remains of the project—including its members’ dead bodies. As they try to piece together what could have possibly decimated an entire project, they discover that some things are best left buried—and some monsters are only too ready to awaken."

My Thoughts:

SPACE ZOMBIES!!!

Do you need to know more?

Okay, so other than space zombies, this book was kinda awesome and was super addictive and action packed. It starts off pretty quick and it just goes and goes and goes and it does not let up until you finish the book and even then you are left going AHHHH NEXT BOOK PLEASE.

I really need to remember that I seem to always enjoy sci fi and I do not read the genre as much as I should. I could not get enough of this book. From the moment the crew lands on Achlys I was hooked. And I found myself screaming at them a lot. So many times the characters are clearly walking into danger and I’m yelling at them to stop but they rudely do not listen to me. You can tell from the get go that something horrible happened to the Black Quarry crew and that whatever it is they need to be far away from it. But of course, things can never go that smoothly. The plot keeps you flipping pages as quick as you can and on the edge of your seat. These infected – space zombies – are ruthless and stopping them is not easy.

This book has quite a few POVs and I’ll admit in the beginning, it was hard to keep up with all the flipping back and forth, but once I settled in I started to enjoy the changes. Thea was my favorite. She is so smart and brave and she may not look like much, but she’s tough as nails. This intern comes through time and time again and I loved that her shining feature was her intelligence and problem solving. Cohen is a bit of a mystery, but of course that intrigued me all the more. I also really liked Nova and I’m really curious to see where her story is going to go from here. Dylan though. I do NOT like Dylan. She charges in without thinking and at every single turn she made the wrong decision against the better judgment of others all because she was in charge and thought she knew best. So Dylan and I did not get along.

The end of this book leaves you with your jaw hanging open. I have no idea where this story is going to go next, but I seriously cannot wait to find out. I’ll be counting down the days.

All in all, Contagion is a read for sci fi and zombie enthusiasts alike. It’s addictive and non-stop and an all-around great read.

  1. Ooh nice! I picked this one up since it sounded creepy and just my kind of read! I have yet to read it because I am mostly debating the merits of waiting to read it next year with the final book which based on the cliffhanger ending I am starting to think it might be wise! Lol! Great review!
