"From New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent comes a richly imagined, provocative new series set in the dark mythology of the Menagerie…

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus big-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale."

My Thoughts:

This book is like nothing I have ever read before and that makes it so fantastic. I’ve been a Rachel Vincent fan for a while now… her Soul Screamers series owns a special place in my heart… and Menagerie is joining those ranks. This book is dark and brutal and none of the characters have it easy, but it’s also wonderful.

Menagerie is truly a brutal read and it is not for the faint of heart. But it also carries an important message and a ton of parallels to our world. Humans have a great capacity for cruelty and this book shows that well. It was hard reading parts of this book, but I also knew that it wasn’t reaching and that people really can suck this much. I think that’s important. It’s not brutal just for shock value, it’s more than that.

What makes this book stand out though is the great cast of characters. I adored Delilah. Her strength and resilience and compassion is astounding. Eryx is my favorite. And Gallagher is so so so intriguing and you just need to meet him.

Menagerie took me by surprise on numerous occasions and that’s not always an easy thing to do. I loved being caught off guard and kept on my toes. This world is so vivid and the cryptids so enticing and that makes your heart break even more. That such horrible things are done to such amazing creatures.

Menagerie is a fantastic read and one of my favorite reads this year. I can’t wait to dive into the sequel.
