On My Shelf: A Lover's Lament by: KL Grayson & BT Urruela

On My Shelf is a feature I started here on the blog and I'm sure there are a ton of similar ones out there, but basically I just wanted to start spotlighting some of the MANY backlist titles I have accumulated on my shelf and kindle. The idea is to spotlight an older book I have on my massive TBR. I also thought it would be a fun way to discuss these books with my fellow bloggers, get some of your thoughts and figure out which ones I need to read ASAP and which ones can wait a bit more. And if you want to join in too, I would love to see what is on your shelf! Just leave me a link in the comments.

I got this one is a Bookworm Box a while ago. It sounds so so heartbreaking and honestly like my kind of read. I never got to it because well... there are just so many books to read and I have a feeling this is one where you have to prepare for heartbreak. I think I want to give this one a go one day though.

So tell me. Have you read it? Did you love it? Hate it? Was it meh?

Blog Tour: Exes With Benefits by: Nicole Williams (Review, Excerpt, & Teasers)

***He wants a second chance. I want a divorce. To get what I want, I’ll have to give him what he does.***
From New York Times & USA Today bestselling author, Nicole Williams:
The only benefit I want from my ex is a divorce.

We got married for all the wrong reasons. The one thing we got right was our separation. I should have known better than to think I could bet on forever with a guy like Canaan Ford. Everything about him screamed impermanent, from his wild eyes to his restless soul.

When I left him and the small town I’d spent my whole life in, I swore I’d never go back. Never only turned out to be five years. Canaan claims he’s changed, but he hasn’t—same knowing smile, same rough demeanor, same body crafted from sin and sinew. And yet, something is different. He thinks this is his chance for redemption. My disagreement comes in the form of divorce papers dropped in his lap. He refuses to sign them. Unless . . .
He wants a month to prove himself to me—that’s his offer. One month to make me fall in love with him again and if I don’t, he’ll sign the papers. As much as I want to say no, I agree. I can suffer my ex for a short amount of time if that’s what it takes to be free of him once and for all. I fell for him once; I won’t make that same mistake twice.

He says we’re not over. I say we were over before we got started. Only one of us can be right, and I can’t let it be him.

My Thoughts:

Nicole Williams is one of my favorite authors and it’s because I know going into her books that I am going to love the characters and the story. She has yet to disappoint me. Exes With Benefits was a great second chance romance with wonderful characters.

I loved Canaan and Maggie so so much. These two deserved a second chance and I’m so glad they got that chance. These two were so right for one another, but timing is everything and sometimes the timing just isn’t right. They had so much chemistry and it’s clear they loved one another. The question is if that love is enough. Canaan was so great and he was determined to show Maggie that he has changed and that he is now a man worthy of her. I loved him and how he was willing to fight for Maggie.

Of course the romance and the swoon was off the charts. Nicole knows how to write a great love story with just enough heartache and pain to make it all worthwhile. Her characters never have it easy, but for me that always makes it all the more special in the end.

All in all, Exes With Benefits was another great read from Nicole Williams. I loved this second chance romance and romance fans will love this one.

“One month. That’s nothing in the scope of a person’s life.” He slid a bit closer.
“One month is everything when it comes to opening myself back up to you.”
He didn’t argue that. He let silence speak for him instead.
“What exactly are you expecting during this one month?” I might have winced when I heard myself say those words.
He rubbed his mouth, trying to hide whatever was trying to form. “For you to give me another chance. For you to be my wife.”
The term made me nauseated. “Your wife? As in your indentured servant? No way.”
It was a smile he was trying to hide. Not very successfully. It made me thankful I’d slipped into these old boots so I could give him a solid kick in the ass if necessary.
“Like be willing to spend time with me. That’s it. That’s all,” he added when he correctly interpreted the question in my eyes. The question.
“What will we be doing during that time we’re spending together?” I pulled at the chest of my dress when I noticed the way his gaze had lingered there a moment too long.
His shoulder rose. “Got any ideas?” There was an unmistakable glint in his eyes.
“No,” I answered instantly.
“You used to have plenty of ideas for filling the time.” He took a swig of his Coke.
“And then I learned how to use my brain.”
He studied my fake smile, almost like he was contemplating what it would feel like against his mouth. “Dinners. Dates. Simple stuff like that.”
I held my best poker face, considering his offer. I didn’t want to stay married to him. If one more month was what it took to be free of Canaan Ford, I could suck it up. I’d already made it five years. “No expectations of anything of a physical nature?”
“If I remember right”—his eyes narrowed as he rubbed the back of his head—“it was generally you who instigated all of that back then.”
I shoved his chest. Bad idea. Solid. Firm. Home.
My jaw ground as I worked to erase that word from my conscious where he was concerned. “And you were just the perfect gentleman.”
Canaan snatched my hand before I could pull it away. Holding onto it, he dragged me closer. Not so close that our bodies touched, but close enough the separation was painful.
“Exactly,” he said in that low voice of his. The one he’d whispered my name in so many times as he moved inside me. “A gentleman gives his woman exactly what she needs. As many times as she need it. Just doing my part.”
“How noble.”
“That’s right. So if you want to make any changes to this one month agreement, consider me your humble servant.” When his hand dropped to my waist, his touch hesitant at the same time it was insistent, I didn’t flinch out of instinct the way I should have.
Instead, I had to remind myself to pull away from him; to flinch at his touch. “I have a boyfriend, Canaan.” Even to my ears, it sounded like a weak protest.
His hand didn’t fall away when I stepped back. “You’re a married woman, Maggie.”
“My husband forfeited his rights years ago.” My eyes found his, expecting them to shoot away once mine made contact.
They didn’t. His gold eyes held to mine. “He’s here to reclaim them.”

Mini Review: Seducing His Student by: London Hale

Release Date: September 18, 2017
from Carina Press
Goodreads | Amazon
Source: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and voluntarily provided a fair and honest review.
"The last thing a newly hired dean should be doing is one of his students…

Dirty flirting with the unbelievably hot barista at Bundt & Grind cafĂ© is not how Elliott Goodridge should be spending his time. Temperance Falls College hired him to counteract a scandal—not burn through his paychecks on overpriced coffee with a side of impure thoughts.

For the amount of time college student Samantha Monroe spends fantasizing about the new guy in town, she should know more than just his name. But despite putting out all kinds of signs that she's down for, well, putting out, Elliott hasn't made a move. Yet.

By the time the truth is revealed, it's too late to stop the charge between them. Sparks fly, but so do rumors. For Elliott, a day without his hands on Sam is too long—and two orgasm-free weeks until graduation is flat-out impossible.

This book is approximately 23,000 words"

My Thoughts:

Another trip to Temperance Falls and another good read. This book was the definition of quick and dirty and I loved it. The action takes off so quick and I loved that. Sam and Elliot are combustible and they are fantastic together. And of course I loved the teacher/student aspect – and no worries we are all adults here and Elliot isn’t her actual teacher, honestly Sam is a month out from graduation. But the forbidden aspect makes their relationship even steamier.  Like with any London Hale book, its super dirty but it’s also really sweet. Elliot is so charming and endearing and the way Sam is the center of his world is so so sweet. Seducing His Student is a super quick and super steamy and perfect for when you want to finish a book in one shot. I breezed through this one and loved every single second.

Cover Reveal: Puck Love by: Carmen Jenner

Title: Puck Love
Author: Carmen Jenner
Genre: Sports Romance
Cover Design: Ben Ellis, BE Designs
Photo: Eric Battershell
Model: Kaz Vanderwaard
Release Date: October 3, 2017
Stella Hart is the hottest thing in country music. For ten years, she’s been Nashville’s darling. She’s pure, sweet, and a positive role model in an industry rife with scandals, sex, and sequins. Men want to own her, women want to be her—everyone wants a piece of her, and Stella? Well, she wants out.
As the center for the Calgary Crushers, Van Ross isn’t afraid of the spotlight, but he doesn’t much like it either. Despite his reputation as a player, the NHL’s bad boy lives for only two things: the game, and his younger brother. That’s why when he comes across a country music superstar seeking refuge at his home in the Canadian Rockies, he’s not too happy with the media shitstorm this surprise houseguest brings.
With a nationwide manhunt, paparazzi dogging their every move, producers of a reality TV show baying for blood, and a record label desperate to see their “good girl” returned safely home, Van and Stella’s lives are snowballing out of control.
While Van would like nothing more than to show the purest of them all how well he handles his er ... stick, Stella is no puck bunny. Nor is she as innocent as she’d have the world believe.
With chemistry like theirs, tension runs high on and off the ice, but the end game is the same for both players: line up the puck, take the shot, and score. If only their hearts understood the play.
Puck fame and fortune.Puck right and wrong.
Puck love.

I creep into the room, wincing when my foot hits a creaky floorboard. I still, just inches from the bed, paralyzed by fear. When he doesn’t move, I slowly pull back the covers and slip beneath them, easing my head onto the pillow beside his. Van’s arm automatically wraps around me and pulls me closer. I don’t know if he’s still asleep, and I don’t much care because . . . cuddles. It’s toasty and warm in his embrace, and I snuggle in.
Van takes a deep breath in through his nose. “There she is.”
“This doesn’t mean anything.”
“Sure it doesn’t,” he mumbles, in possibly the sexiest sleep-roughened voice I’ve ever heard.
“My fire’s gone out. That’s the only reason I’m here right now.”
“Do you want me to come light it again?”
I pause for entirely too long. “No. You’re way hotter.”
He chuckles. “Than fire?”
“Shut up. You know what I mean.”
“I’m not really sure I do. I think I’m going to need you to spell it out for me, snuggle bunny,” he murmurs, his warm breath ruffling my hair. Oh, I’ll spell it out, alright. I stretch my toes back and poke him with them. He jerks away, and I plant both of my feet on his warm legs and chortle as he shrieks like a little girl.
I snuggle closer, my body spooned by his much larger one, and a beat passes in silence. “Still doesn’t mean anything.”
“If I say it doesn’t mean anything, will you shut up?”
“If I say it doesn’t mean anything, will you blow me?”
“Oh my god, Van.” I attempt to squirm out of his grasp, but he pulls me closer and buries his nose in my hair. He sighs loudly.
“Relax, I’m just kidding. Sort of.”
“Go to sleep, hockey hero.”

Review & Excerpt Tour: Play On (Play On #1) by: Samantha Young

Release Date: September 12, 2017
Goodreads | Amazon | iBooks | B&N
Kobo | Smashwords
Cover Design by Hang Lee

Source: I received a copy of this book as part of the blog tour and voluntarily provided a fair and honest review.
"Nora O’Brien chased a dream from Indiana to Scotland, so sure it was the right thing to do. Three
years later she was left in her adopted country with nothing to her name but guilt and regret.

Until Aidan Lennox entered her life.

Older, worldlier, a music producer and composer, the sexy Scot should never have made sense for Nora. But somehow in each other they found the light they were looking for, the laughter and the passion—the strength to play on despite their past losses.

But when life dealt Aidan another unlucky hand, instead of reaching for her he disappeared. The agonizing loss of him inspired something within Nora. It fired her spirit— the anger and hurt pushing her forward to take control and reach for her dreams.

Finally pursuing a career on stage while she put herself through college, everything is how Nora wants it. She’s avoiding heartbreak and concentrating on her goals.
Sounds easy but it’s not. Because Aidan is back. And for some reason he hates Nora.

He’s determined to be at war with her.

And she has absolutely no idea why."

My Thoughts:

Samantha Young really knows how to put your heart through the wringer, and Play On did just that. This book is a rollercoaster of emotions and as a reader you ride the highs and lows with the characters.

Our main character is Nora and we get to see Nora at three very distinct parts of her life. We watch her as a kid get swept up and move to Scotland, then we watch her living her life there and then we see her deal with true tragedy and guilt. My heart broke for her and all she endured.

Of course I loved Aidan. Samantha Young knows how to write a wonderfully sexy and charming and good guy. He hasn’t had it easy either and I hurt for him. Their combined pasts made these two work despite all of their differences on the surface. I really loved how determined Aidan was and that he never gave up. These two had great chemistry and I really loved them together and rooted for them.

I also loved the secondary characters in this one. Roddy was an absolute riot. And Seonaid was such a great friend to Nora and I truly loved that. We all know I am a big fan of positive and supportive female friendships. And Sylvie is also wonderful.

Like I said this book is a rollercoaster and there is a lot of tragedy and at times it really made my heart hurt but it also made me smile and I loved the romance between Aidan and Nora. The characters have a lot of ups and downs but watching them work through it all was so rewarding.

My only hang up with Play On is that it did take me a bit to get fully invested and took a while for the story to really get going. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the time jumps, but that’s a me thing and just a style I don’t always love. It did work for the story here but sometimes there were just things I wanted to see but didn’t get to.

All in all, Play On was another good read from Samantha Young. She knows how to write a good romance that will both break and mend your heart.
