On My Shelf: The Fixed Trilogy by: Laurelin Paige

On My Shelf is a feature I started here on the blog and I'm sure there are a ton of similar ones out there, but basically I just wanted to start spotlighting some of the MANY backlist titles I have accumulated on my shelf and kindle. The idea is to spotlight an older book I have on my massive TBR. I also thought it would be a fun way to discuss these books with my fellow bloggers, get some of your thoughts and figure out which ones I need to read ASAP and which ones can wait a bit more. And if you want to join in too, I would love to see what is on your shelf! Just leave me a link in the comments.

I got this trilogy when I met Laurelin Paige at a signing a few years ago. It sounded so so good and the author was so nice. And since then the book has just sat unread on my shelf. Why can't there be more hours in the day?!?!

So tell me. Have you read it? Did you love it? Hate it? Was it meh?

Book Review: Tower Of Dawn (Throne Of Glass #6) by: Sarah J. Maas

Release Date: September 5, 2017
from Bloomsbury USA Childrens Books
Goodreads | Amazon

"In the next installment of the New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series, follow Chaol on his sweeping journey to a distant empire.

Chaol Westfall has always defined himself by his unwavering loyalty, his strength, and his position as the Captain of the Guard. But all of that has changed since the glass castle shattered, since his men were slaughtered, since the King of Adarlan spared him from a killing blow, but left his body broken.

His only shot at recovery lies with the legendary healers of the Torre Cesme in Antica—the stronghold of the southern continent's mighty empire. And with war looming over Dorian and Aelin back home, their survival might lie with Chaol and Nesryn convincing its rulers to ally with them.

But what they discover in Antica will change them both—and be more vital to saving Erilea than they could have imagined."

My Thoughts:

*spoilers for previous books in the series*

This series is probably my favorite series ever, second only to Harry Potter and well that series has some serious nostalgia attached to it, but Throne of Glass is one of those series I am ridiculously invested in and read over and over. Tower Of Dawn was one of my most anticipated reads this year and it’s also one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. I’m just so invested in this world and these characters, that as I was reading the book I yelled out loud in my empty apartment to these characters telling them what to do or what they don’t know and I stress over their lives and I love every single second of it.

Look, I’ve always loved Chaol, I’ve gotten mad at him at times, but I’ve always loved him and I’ve always appreciated how he grew and changed over the book. But here is the thing, my love for Chaol is not tied to whether he winds up with Aelin or not. In the end, I just want him to be happy and I think we all know that while Aelin and Chaol were nice for a while, they both grew into different people who no longer fit. So what I loved about Tower Of Dawn, is that we got to see Chaol go down this new path and learn to cope with his past and he went exactly where he needed to go for a number of reasons and I was so so proud of him in this book.

And now for Yrene. I’ve been waiting for her to make an appearance again and the wait was so worth it. I adored Yrene. I adored the woman she became and that she took a chance a stranger gave her and made it count. Yrene is so so strong and I forever love Sarah J. Maas for giving us no shortage of versatile and badass heroines to look up to.

Speaking of badass heroines brings me to Nesryn, who I somehow love even more now. Nesryn really comes into her own in this book and I frickin love this woman. She doesn’t let anything stop her and I loved watching her finally make choices for herself and to make her happy. She was great in Queen of Shadows, but she shines in this book.

And along with these characters, we meet so many new faces and even get a surprise visit from someone we haven’t seen in quite some time. There will never ever come a day when I am not amazed by how Maas weaves together all of these details and how seemingly unimportant things are so so important. And there is so much that happens in this book and some huge huge revelations are dropped. Game changing information happens here and now I just cannot wait for that next book to see how the buildup from these six books finally pieces together. I’m going to agonize waiting for that final book.

Tower Of Dawn was an amazing read and even though I missed some of my favorite Throne Of Glass characters, their presence is still very much felt throughout the book and these characters definitely fill the void. This book really changes the game and I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Dane James worked my stepfather’s fields. He was the boy next door.

Strong.

Hardworking.

Forbidden.
From the moment we met, we were star-crossed lovers—always wanting, never having. We loved each other for most of our lives, but right from the beginning destiny had other plans.  She knew we would fall in love.  She knew we would fall apart.  Over and over again, like the curse of a recurring nightmare.  Or the hope of a familiar dream.
Our past was tumultuous.  Our future was bleak.  But the one thing we always had was the beautiful now.
Until that was taken from us, too.
Get it for the release price of $3.99 while it lasts, or read for FREE in Kindle Unlimited!  Grab your copy here.

And when faced with the harsh realities of life, love can still prevail over all." -- Jennifer

✩ "I started reading - and I kept on reading. I couldn't stop. It was all so heartbreakingly sad and beautiful and sweet and frustrating and I just could not stop." -- Bianca

My Thoughts:

It’s no secret that I am a big fan of M. Leighton. She is one of my go to authors and her books never let me down. So many of her books have spots on my all-time favorite’s shelf. With that being said, The Beautiful Now is one of my favorite Michelle books to date. It’s the perfect blend of heartache and happy. I connected with the characters immediately and loved them so much.

I adored Brinkley. She is so strong and the way she built her life is something to be admired. I also loved that while she was strong she was vulnerable too. Simply put, she was real and I loved her mistakes and flaws and all. Of course, I also loved Dane James. He was such a good guy and it’s a shame so many others couldn’t see that. These two together were so wonderful and they truly broke my heart.

I won’t give anything away, but I want to say I love how this book was written and that we got to see events from different points in time. Michelle does a great job of giving the readers a clear picture of why things had to go the way they went and how something that seemed so good went so wrong. She really shreds your heart to pieces in this one, but then she puts it back together and makes all the pain worth it in the end.

I have so much more I want to say, but I don’t want to spoil anything. All I’ll say is The Beautiful Now is a great read and will both break and mend your heart. M. Leighton delivers an addictive and gut wrenching read with this one.

New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author, M. Leighton, is a rarelyever comfortable speaking about herself in the third person, but here goes. Michelle is a former nurse who has always harbored a passion for the written word, a weakness for alpha males, and a profound love of all things romantic. Never in her wildest dreams did this Yankee-turned-Southerner imagine her life as it is today. She has the best job in the world, a husband who treats her like a princess, and a dog that's so smart she may one day write a novel, too. You can often find Michelle hidden away in her cave, crafting a new story, or out in the sunshine enjoying some quiet time with her man. Movies, wine, and good food are frequently thrown into the mix, and exercise on days that start with Q. She loves laughter, chocolate, the color red, and you can find out more about her at www.mleightonbooks.com. Blog Tour: Exes With Benefits by: Nicole Williams (Review, Excerpt, & Teasers)

***He wants a second chance. I want a divorce. To get what I want, I’ll have to give him what he does.***
From New York Times & USA Today bestselling author, Nicole Williams:
The only benefit I want from my ex is a divorce.

We got married for all the wrong reasons. The one thing we got right was our separation. I should have known better than to think I could bet on forever with a guy like Canaan Ford. Everything about him screamed impermanent, from his wild eyes to his restless soul.

When I left him and the small town I’d spent my whole life in, I swore I’d never go back. Never only turned out to be five years. Canaan claims he’s changed, but he hasn’t—same knowing smile, same rough demeanor, same body crafted from sin and sinew. And yet, something is different. He thinks this is his chance for redemption. My disagreement comes in the form of divorce papers dropped in his lap. He refuses to sign them. Unless . . .
He wants a month to prove himself to me—that’s his offer. One month to make me fall in love with him again and if I don’t, he’ll sign the papers. As much as I want to say no, I agree. I can suffer my ex for a short amount of time if that’s what it takes to be free of him once and for all. I fell for him once; I won’t make that same mistake twice.

He says we’re not over. I say we were over before we got started. Only one of us can be right, and I can’t let it be him.

My Thoughts:

Nicole Williams is one of my favorite authors and it’s because I know going into her books that I am going to love the characters and the story. She has yet to disappoint me. Exes With Benefits was a great second chance romance with wonderful characters.

I loved Canaan and Maggie so so much. These two deserved a second chance and I’m so glad they got that chance. These two were so right for one another, but timing is everything and sometimes the timing just isn’t right. They had so much chemistry and it’s clear they loved one another. The question is if that love is enough. Canaan was so great and he was determined to show Maggie that he has changed and that he is now a man worthy of her. I loved him and how he was willing to fight for Maggie.

Of course the romance and the swoon was off the charts. Nicole knows how to write a great love story with just enough heartache and pain to make it all worthwhile. Her characters never have it easy, but for me that always makes it all the more special in the end.

All in all, Exes With Benefits was another great read from Nicole Williams. I loved this second chance romance and romance fans will love this one.

Excerpt:

“One month. That’s nothing in the scope of a person’s life.” He slid a bit closer.
“One month is everything when it comes to opening myself back up to you.”
He didn’t argue that. He let silence speak for him instead.
“What exactly are you expecting during this one month?” I might have winced when I heard myself say those words.
He rubbed his mouth, trying to hide whatever was trying to form. “For you to give me another chance. For you to be my wife.”
The term made me nauseated. “Your wife? As in your indentured servant? No way.”
It was a smile he was trying to hide. Not very successfully. It made me thankful I’d slipped into these old boots so I could give him a solid kick in the ass if necessary.
“Like be willing to spend time with me. That’s it. That’s all,” he added when he correctly interpreted the question in my eyes. The question.
“What will we be doing during that time we’re spending together?” I pulled at the chest of my dress when I noticed the way his gaze had lingered there a moment too long.
His shoulder rose. “Got any ideas?” There was an unmistakable glint in his eyes.
“No,” I answered instantly.
“You used to have plenty of ideas for filling the time.” He took a swig of his Coke.
“And then I learned how to use my brain.”
He studied my fake smile, almost like he was contemplating what it would feel like against his mouth. “Dinners. Dates. Simple stuff like that.”
I held my best poker face, considering his offer. I didn’t want to stay married to him. If one more month was what it took to be free of Canaan Ford, I could suck it up. I’d already made it five years. “No expectations of anything of a physical nature?”
“If I remember right”—his eyes narrowed as he rubbed the back of his head—“it was generally you who instigated all of that back then.”
I shoved his chest. Bad idea. Solid. Firm. Home.
My jaw ground as I worked to erase that word from my conscious where he was concerned. “And you were just the perfect gentleman.”
Canaan snatched my hand before I could pull it away. Holding onto it, he dragged me closer. Not so close that our bodies touched, but close enough the separation was painful.
“Exactly,” he said in that low voice of his. The one he’d whispered my name in so many times as he moved inside me. “A gentleman gives his woman exactly what she needs. As many times as she need it. Just doing my part.”
“How noble.”
“That’s right. So if you want to make any changes to this one month agreement, consider me your humble servant.” When his hand dropped to my waist, his touch hesitant at the same time it was insistent, I didn’t flinch out of instinct the way I should have.
Instead, I had to remind myself to pull away from him; to flinch at his touch. “I have a boyfriend, Canaan.” Even to my ears, it sounded like a weak protest.
His hand didn’t fall away when I stepped back. “You’re a married woman, Maggie.”
“My husband forfeited his rights years ago.” My eyes found his, expecting them to shoot away once mine made contact.
They didn’t. His gold eyes held to mine. “He’s here to reclaim them.”
