"The Girl of Fire and Thorns meets The Queen of the Tearling in this thrilling fantasy standalone
about one girl’s unexpected rise to power.

Freya was never meant be queen. Twenty third in line to the throne, she never dreamed of a life in the palace, and would much rather research in her laboratory than participate in the intrigues of court. However, when an extravagant banquet turns deadly and the king and those closest to him are poisoned, Freya suddenly finds herself on the throne.

Freya may have escaped the massacre, but she is far from safe. The nobles don’t respect her, her councillors want to control her, and with the mystery of who killed the king still unsolved, Freya knows that a single mistake could cost her the kingdom – and her life.

Freya is determined to survive, and that means uncovering the murderers herself. Until then, she can’t trust anyone. Not her advisors. Not the king’s dashing and enigmatic illegitimate son. Not even her own father, who always wanted the best for her, but also wanted more power for himself.

As Freya’s enemies close in and her loyalties are tested, she must decide if she is ready to rule and, if so, how far she is willing to go to keep the crown."

My Thoughts:

This book surprised me in that I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. The premise here is so cool and the execution is not lacking. I love how this book blended fantasy with science and I LOVED how smart our heroine was.

Freya is a fantastic heroine. She is immediately likable and easy to root for. She is also incredibly smart, like genius smart. Freya is a scientist and that is how she approaches everything in life. She dreams of creating an invention that will enable her to get away from court life. But those dreams go up in smoke when the majority of the court is murdered and twenty-third in line Freya becomes Queen. This is nothing she ever planned for and she isn’t good at playing court life so she approaches this with her analytical mind and I loved that. I don’t think I’ve ever read about a Queen who was so methodical in her approach. And naturally she puts that mind of hers towards finding the murderer.

This book kept me guessing and I didn’t know who the murderer was until right before Freya did. The author did a fantastic job at keeping the reader guessing and questioning everyone’s motives. I won’t even discuss any secondary characters because I don’t want to give anything away. But I will say it has a great secondary cast of characters. Also, I loved Freya’s kitty.

The only tiny complaint is that I wish the romance had a tad bit more closure BUT I also get it. This book isn’t about the romance and it shouldn’t be about the romance. We get a pretty clear picture where things will go, but I just would have liked to seeeeee that. But that’s just the romantic in me.

Long May She Reign was a great read and I loved how it blended fantasy with a murder mystery and science. So far I’ve truly enjoyed everything from this author and I look forward to more.

  2. I've heard mostly bad things about this book so I felt pretty good about skipping it. I didn't really enjoy the author's debut duology -it was so boring! I'm glad the heroine in this book is likable and smart. Too bad about the romance though. I love a good HEA, and closure! But I'm glad you enjoyed the book overall. Great review, Teresa!

    Have a great day. =)

  3. Well, I'm sold! This sounds fantastic, and Freya sounds wonderful! I'm all for a book about an amazing heroine and have no problem with it not being about the romance. Great review, Wifeycakes!
