On My Shelf: The Kiss Of Deception by: Mary E. Pearson

On My Shelf is a feature I started here on the blog and I'm sure there are a ton of similar ones out there, but basically I just wanted to start spotlighting some of the MANY backlist titles I have accumulated on my shelf and kindle. The idea is to spotlight an older book I have on my massive TBR. I also thought it would be a fun way to discuss these books with my fellow bloggers, get some of your thoughts and figure out which ones I need to read ASAP and which ones can wait a bit more. And if you want to join in too, I would love to see what is on your shelf! Just leave me a link in the comments.

I have heard nothing but good things about this one and it really does sound like a "me" book. I remember really looking forward to this one too, but then I forgot to read it. I am also in love with the covers for this series, so that makes me more excited.

So tell me. Have you read it? Did you love it? Hate it? Was it meh?

Book Review: Outlander (Outlander #1) by: Diana Gabaldon

Release Date: July 26, 2005 (this edition)
from Dell Publishing
Goodreads | Amazon

"The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with
her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord...1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives."

My Thoughts:

At this point there isn’t much I can say about Outlander that hasn’t already been said. It truly is a fantastic read. It took me a while to listen to and at times it felt like I would never finish it, but it was so so so so good. I loved Jamie and Claire so much.

Claire is an amazing character. She is so strong and fierce and smart. I absolutely loved her. And of course I adored Jamie too. I mean how could I not? And the best part is that they were even better together. They are such a strong couple and they work well together. Jamie can be overbearing and stubborn and Claire just gives it right back. THEY ARE SO GREAT TOGETHER AND I JUST LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

This book had everything I love in a book. A fantastic romance, a fantasy twist, guys in kilts, danger, action, drama, swoons, kissing, seriously everything I want. It also had its darker aspects and those aspects truly hurt my heart. It is a rich and vivid world but it is realistic to the time and those aspects make it dangerous.

Outlander is a great read and I’m sure you didn’t need me to tell you that, most people would say the same. I have found my newest obsession and I regret nothing.

Release Day: Dangerous Heart by: Fiona Paul

Happy release day to Dangerous Heart by Fiona Paul! I read this book when it first released as Starling and I absolutely adored it (check out my review here). I truly think this series deserves all the love!

"Cassandra Caravello and Luca are fugitives, on the run from the law and the deadly Order of the
Eternal Rose. As they pursue the only evidence that could save them, their worlds—and their romance— are torn apart by spiteful friends and murderous enemies.
When Cass finds herself ensnared in the Order’s twisted plot, Falco emerges once again as her only hope for freedom…but this time, Luca has a shocking scheme of his own.
From ancient mercenaries to sly magicians, clever courtesans and vengeful killers, no one can be trusted. In the breathtaking conclusion to the Secrets of the Eternal Rose trilogy, Cass must confront the Order and decide where her heart lies, once and for all.
Formerly published as Starling, this romantic mystery is perfect for fans of Philippa Gregory’s The Other Boleyn Girl and Jennifer Donnelly’s These Shallow Graves."

About The Author:
Fiona Paul lives in St. Louis, MO where she managed to persuade fancy universities to award her degrees in psychology and nursing. Between her studies, she traveled around five continents and spent time living in Thailand and South Korea (which is probably why she finds the idea of wearing shoes in the house a little weird).

In addition to writing, Fiona is somewhat obsessive about coffee, music, and adventure sports. Her future goals include swimming with great white sharks and writing a whole slew of novels, not necessarily in that order. On My Shelf: Deadly Little Lessons by: Laurie Faria Stolarz

And if you want to join in too, I would love to see what is on your shelf! Just leave me a link in the comments.

Years ago now, back in my pre-blogging days, I binge read the first four books in this series and really enjoyed them. I then settled in to wait for the final fifth book to release. However, once it came out I was in full on blogging mode. We all know how those first few months of blogging are. I got caught up and when it released I just never got around to it. It is now 2016 and I still haven't read it! I don't even really remember much of the series, except that I loved Ben and was cranky that those two hadn't figured things out yet. So I think I really need to make time for this one soon so I can close the door on this series and hopefully I still enjoy it as much as I did a few years ago.

So tell me. Have you read it? Did you love it? Hate it? Was it meh?

Book Review: Me Before You (Me Before You #1) by: Jojo Moyes

Release Date: December 31, 2012
from Viking Adult
Goodreads | Amazon

"Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and
home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.

What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane.

Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that.

What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they're going to change the other for all time."

My Thoughts:

I was warned. I knew going in that this book would hurt and it really did. There were tears and ugly sobbing. It was not pretty. But at the same time this book is gorgeous. I loved every single word of this book and its one of those books you know you will never forget.

Louisa and Will were both wonderful. I loved Will and his grumpy ways and dry humor. I loved Louisa and her quirky attitude and crazy clothes. I loved how they brought out the best in each other. I liked watching these two people go from hating each other to so much more. I just loved it all. It was crazy to see both characters evolve so much over the course of the book. I also loved the view of both families in this one. Neither of these families are perfect and I was so mad at so many of them a lot of the time, but I really appreciated certain people towards the end.

I know I’m being intentionally vague but I don’t want to spoil anything and I’m really a bit at a loss of what to say so I’ll leave it at this: Me Before You is a gorgeous and heartbreaking read and I recommend it to all.

Release Blitz: Toward The Sound Of Chaos by: Carmen Jenner

A heart-wrenching new military romance from USA TODAY bestselling author Carmen Jenner.

Available exclusively on Amazon and KU

Jake Tucker is broken. At twenty-two, he went into the Marine Corps a naïve, troubled youth. Nine years and four tours later, Jake finds himself back on US soil, though his mind remains firmly planted in the sands of Afghanistan with the men he left behind.
Wounded, chewed up and spat out by war, Jake has only his dog, Nuke, PTSD, and survivor’s guilt to keep him company. He’s lived every day for nine years wondering when it will be his last, but there’s little comfort in the fact that he’s still standing when his platoon isn’t.
Ellie Mason doesn’t have time for broken. She’s too busy trying to put food on the table. And keeping up with the demands of her autistic son, Spencer, is sometimes like fighting behind enemy lines. As if navigating the minefields of single parenthood isn’t enough, Ellie finds herself drawn to the quiet Marine who’s just as lonely as she is. But she’s loved damaged men before, and it left her wounded.
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Fairhope, Alabama, Ellie and Jake find themselves running toward the sound of chaos.
Love is war.
Only the strong survive, and surrender is inevitable.

Excerpt:
I ease her down on her feet, before the bed and take a step back. I want this, God do I want this, but I’m terrified. Elle’s eyes roam over me and she takes in a deep breath, and I won’t lie—it hurts like hell. I don’t want pity, and I don’t want the woman I care about looking at me like a monster just sprouted from my back. She reaches out a hand and trails her fingertips over my scarred flesh, feeling the hard, ugly edges. I flinch a little, and she pulls away as if she’s been burned.
“Did I hurt you?” she whispers.
“Angel, it hurts just looking at you.”
She smiles and continues her exploration of my body, openin’ old wounds with every scar she touches, and yet it’s as if she’s tenderly sewing them shut at the same time. I haven’t felt the touch of a woman for a very long time, and never again did I think I would, especially not one as perfect and kind-hearted as this.
“What did they do to you, Jake?” Her eyes are bright with tears, and I grab her hands and hold them flat to my chest.
“I don’t want your pity, Elle.”
“You think that’s why I’m here?” she says, staring up at me with those incredible eyes. “You think that’s all this is between us?”
“I thought about it.” I nod. “I can’t see much other reason that a woman like you would want someone like me. I’m a freak and a drunk, and you? You’re so goddamn beautiful it hurts.”

Prologue
Dusty, empty shoe boxes, stacked taller and wider than her slim body, wobbled as she pressed her back against them, tucking her bony knees into her chest.
Breathe. Just Breathe. Breathe.
Wedged in the back of the dingy closet, she didn’t dare make a sound as she sucked her lower lip between her teeth. Focusing on forcing every grimy breath into her lungs, she felt tears well in her eyes.
Oh gosh, she’d made such a big mistake, and Miss Becky was right. She was a bad girl.
She’d reached for the dirty and stained cookie jar earlier, the one shaped like a teddy bear that hid cookies that tasted funny. She wasn’t supposed to get cookies or any food by herself, but she’d just been so hungry that her tummy hurt, and Miss Becky was sick again, napping on the couch. She hadn’t meant to knock the ashtray off the counter, shattering it into tiny pieces. Some were shaped like icicles that clung to the roof during the winter. Others were no bigger than chips.
All she’d wanted was a cookie.
Her slender shoulders jerked at the sound of the all cracking on the other side of the closet. She bit down harder on her lip. A metallic taste burst into her mouth. Tomorrow there would be a hold the size of Mr. Henry’s big hand in the plaster, and Miss Becky would cry and she’d get sick again.
The soft creak of the closet door was like a crack of thunder to her ears.
Oh no, no, no…
He wasn’t supposed to find her in here. This was her safe place whenever Mr. Henry was angry or when he—
She tensed, eyes peeling wide as a body taller and broader than hers slipped inside and then knelt in front of her. In the dark, she couldn’t make out much of his features, but she knew in her belly and her chest who it was.
“I’m sorry,” she gasped.
“I know.” A hand settled on her shoulder, the weight reassuring. He was the only person she felt okay with when he touched her. “I need you to stay in here, ‘kay?”
Miss Becky had said once that he was only six months older than her six years, but he always seemed so much bigger, older than her, because in her eyes, he took up her entire world.
She nodded.
“Don’t come out,” he said, and then he pressed into her hands the redheaded doll she’d dropped in the kitchen after she broke the ashtray and rushed into the closet. Too frightened to retrieve her, she’d left Velvet where she had fallen, and she’d been so upset because the doll had been a gift from him many, many months before. She had no idea how he’d gotten Velvet, but one day he’d simply shown up with her, and she was hers, only hers.
“You stay in here. No matter what.”
Holding the doll close, clenched between her knees and chest, she nodded again.
He shifted, stiffening as an angry shout rattled the walls around them. It was her name that dripped ice down her spine; her name that was shouted so furiously.
A small whimper parted her lips and she whispered, “I just wanted a cookie.”
“It’s okay. Remember? I promised I’d keep you safe forever. Just don’t make a sound.” He squeezed her shoulder. “Just stay quiet, and when I…when I get back, I’ll read to you, ‘kay? All about the stupid rabbit.”
All she could do was nod again, because there had been times when she hadn’t stayed quiet and she’d never forgotten those consequences. But if she stayed quiet, she knew what was coming. He wouldn’t be able to read to her tonight. Tomorrow he would miss school and he wouldn’t be okay even though he would tell her he was.
He lingered for a moment and then he eased out of the closet. The bedroom door shut with a smack, and she lifted the doll, pressing her tearstained face into it. A button on Velvet’s chest poked at her cheek.
Don’t make a sound.
Mr. Henry started to yell.
Don’t make a sound.
Footsteps punched down the hall.
Don’t make a sound.
Flesh smacked. Something hit the floor, and Miss Becky must have been feeling better, because she was suddenly shouting, but in the closet the only sound that mattered was the fleshy whack that came over and over. She opened her mouth, screaming silently into the doll.
Don’t make a sound.
