Book Review: One Grave At A Time (Night Huntress #6) by: Jeaniene Frost

Release Date: August 30, 2011
from Harper
Goodreads | Amazon

"How Do You Send A Killer to the Grave When He's Already Dead?
Having narrowly averted an (under)World War, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans's voodoo queen just keeps on giving - leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit.

Centuries ago, Heinrich Kramer was a witch hunter. Now, every All Hallows Eve, he take physical form to torture innocent women before burning them alive. This year, however, a determined Cat and Bones must risk all to send him back to the other side of eternity - forever. But one wrong step and they'll be digging their own graves."

My Thoughts:

Well, I flew through this book. I know there are a lot of people who didn’t particularly love this installment in the Night Huntress series, but I found myself addicted. I just can’t get enough of these characters.

What I loved about this one is we really see how good of a person Cat is. She doesn’t just step up when its people she loves in danger, she steps up whenever it is needed. I love her fierceness and determination.

Of course I’m still madly in love with Bones and that’s not going to end any time soon. I’ll be madly in love even when I’ve long finished this series. He is just wonderful.

I still love the secondary characters. Spade and Denise are fabulous. Justina still grates on my nerves in the best way possible. Ian is still a pain in the ass, but also amusing. And then there are some new characters that I know I’m going to wanna hurt. So it’s a good cast of characters.

I’ve talked about this before, but I’m going to again. I love Cat and Bones as a couple, especially as they have developed over the last few books. I really like how strong their relationship is and that they continually work together. I love angst and relationship drama, but I also love it when the couple finds strength by working together and that is exactly what Cat and Bones do.

All in all, One Grave At A Time was awesome. This series has solidified itself as an all-time favorite and I am dreading the day when I have no more Cat and Bones books to read.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I'm Thankful For

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke And The Bookish.

This week I am featuring books I am thankful to have read. I don't have ten books to feature, but I still wanted to feature some books that are very important to me. First up, I am of course incredibly thankful to have read the Harry Potter series. Those books made me the reader I am today and I cannot wait for Christmas week for my yearly HP re-read. Hogwarts will always be home. Then there is of course Twilight. While Harry Potter made me a reader, it was Twilight that really opened my eyes to paranormal and I will forever be thankful. I always enjoyed vampires and the like, but Twilight just led me to a ton of other books and I will forever love it for that. I am also thankful for all of the Shadowhunter books (The Infernal Devices in particular). I just adore these books and this world and Tessa and Will and Jem own my soul. And then there is Obsidian. This was the first JLA book I read and I will forever be thankful I picked it up. We all know JLA is my favorite author, so of course I'm thankful to Obsidian for leading me to all of her other books. And then there is The Wild Ones. That book led me to Michelle, who has become a dear friend and I will forever be thankful I picked up that book. Of course there is Throne of Glass. That series absolutely owns me and lives up with the likes of Harry Potter so I am of course thankful I picked up Throne of Glass back in the day because I adore the characters and I have loved following this series. And last but not least, I am thankful for Easy. That book is so special and it opened my eyes to the New Adult genre. I just adore that book and those characters and its message and I am thankful for all of that.

Special Teaser Tuesday & Giveaway: Bloodcraft by: Amalie Howard

Bloodcraft by Amalie Howard
Series: Bloodspell #2
Genre: Upper YA/NA (mature content), Fantasy
Publication: December 15th, 2015
Cover DesignerAlan Pranke

All magic has its price, and no one knows that better than Victoria Warrick. Gifted with a centuries-old blood curse, Tori has finally learned to master her blood’s demands and has emerged triumphant with Christian Devereux, a vampire overlord, at her side.

But the worst is yet to come …

In the infamous City of Lights, home to both the Witch Clans and the Vampire Council, Tori enrolls at the exclusive Belles Fontaines school in Paris, where she is faced with a devastating choice: choose Christian and be an outcast, or choose the coven and secure her place with the witches.

When the fate of the supernatural world is targeted by a sinister new threat, Christian and Victoria must unite their two warring species to defeat it. Their bond will be tested, twisted, and sorely weakened, and Tori will find herself in uncharted territory—a dangerous place to be when her blood’s magic has its own dark agenda.

But to save them all, she may have no choice but to invoke its deadly power.

Christian felt hollow as if someone had scooped out his insides with a trowel, leaving only the shell of his body behind. Love didn’t always conquer all—sometimes it fled in the face of fear. He didn’t blame her. War was coming, after all.

The terrible curse that makes her blood run black will stop at nothing to control her. And Christian has a sinister secret of his own...

Book Review: The Blood Of Olympus (The Heroes Of Olympus #5) by: Rick Riordan

Release Date: October 7, 2014
from Disney Hyperion
Goodreads | Amazon

"Though the Greek and Roman crewmembers of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen—all of them—and they're stronger than ever. They must be stopped before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to have two demigods sacrificed in Athens. She needs their blood—the blood of Olympus—in order to wake.

The demigods are having more frequent visions of a terrible battle at Camp Half-Blood. The Roman legion from Camp Jupiter, led by Octavian, is almost within striking distance. Though it is tempting to take the Athena Parthenos to Athens to use as a secret weapon, the friends know that the huge statue belongs back on Long Island, where it "might" be able to stop a war between the two camps.

The Athena Parthenos will go west; the Argo II will go east. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea's army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. They have sacrificed too much already. And if Gaea wakes, it is game over."

My Thoughts:

Well it is over. It has been quite the journey and we have reached the end. I have really enjoyed following these characters over the last five books (or ten books if we are talking about some characters). As with any conclusion it is always hard to say goodbye, but I definitely feel satisfied with the way everything came together.

Before I discuss the things I enjoyed about the book, I first want to go into the one thing that I was really really upset over. I was so upset that we did not get a lot of Percy in this book and that he didn’t have any chapters. I get it. This series is not just his story, these books are a combination of many characters BUT I can’t help but think that this series wouldn’t even exist if it wasn’t for the first Percy Jackson books and I just feel a bit cheated as a reader that in this final book I didn’t get a lot of Percy. He was really a minor character in this conclusion. Again, I know it’s not his story, but I was kinda hoping that since this is the last time we were going to see him that he would have had a bigger part to play.

Other than the lack of Percy I did really enjoy The Blood of Olympus. I really like how so many different characters come together and blend. These characters have grown so much and have gotten so strong over the course of the series. As I have mentioned in previous reviews, the amount of perspectives can be hard to keep up with but it also allows the reader to see a much bigger picture.

My favorite perspectives in this book were Leo and Nico. Leo is just so funny and I really love him. I also love how strong and determined he is. He is probably my favorite character of the series outside of Percy. Then we have Nico who I really came to love. He is so lonely and my heart broke for him. I wanted him to see that he was surrounded by friends in the worst way and I was so happy with the way his story went over the course of this book. Oh and I also want to mention Jason because I really like him too but I mostly like his interactions with Percy. They are both just so funny together because they are so alike and when they are together they are such a strong force.

The Blood Of Olympus was a very good conclusion and I am so sad there are no more books to look forward to but I am really glad I was able to enjoy such a great ride.

Note: I wrote this review before I found out about The Trials Of Apollo and thought this was the end.. but YAY more from Percy world!

Top Ten Tuesday: Quotes I Loved From Books I Read In The Past Year Or So

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke And The Bookish.

I love the topic this week! I adore quotes and I keep journals upon journals of my favorite quotes from books. So this topic was not easy for me. I kinda just scrolled through some of the more recent quotes I saved for my journals and decided to share those.

"Jeb is an anchor; he holds me grounded to my humanity and compassion. But Morpheus is the wind; he drags me kicking and screaming to the highest precipice, shoves me off, then watches me fly with netherling wings. When Jeb's at my side, the world is a canvas-- unblemished and welcoming; when I'm with Morpheus, it's a wanton playground-- wicked and addictive." - Ensnared by: A.G. Howard

"It was the sort of bone deep emotion that made him want to hold her tighter with one hand, and draw a sword against the world with the other." - First Drop of Crimson by: Jeaniene Frost

"Let's go rattle the stars." - Queen of Shadows by: Sarah J. Maas

"They had walked out of darkness and pain and despair together. They were still walking out of it. So that smile... It struck him stupid every time he saw it and realized it was for him." - Queen of Shadows by: Sarah J. Maas

"To whatever end." - Queen of Shadows by: Sarah J. Maas

(okay... I'm done with the Queen of Shadows quotes now... I just couldn't help myself.)

"I'm totally calm. I would just like to know who marred your skin so that I can put a name and face to the creature I'm going to kill very slowly." "I think we might have different definitions of calm," I said wryly. "I've never been calmer in my life." - Every Last Breath by: Jennifer L. Armentrout

"You called her Kitten? And she let you? She put me in a coma for three days when I called her that? My balls never recovered from her smashing them into my spine?" "And well she should have," Bones agreed. "She's my Kitten, and no one else's." - One Foot In The Grave by: Jeaniene Frost

"I love books," I said simply. "There's nothing more powerful than the written word. It can transfer you to a place that exists right now that you'll never get to visit or it can take you to a world that doesn't. It can show you things you'll never experience otherwise in life, and books... most importantly, they can take you out of your own world, and sometimes you need that." - Dream Of You by: Jennifer L. Armentrout

"Grabbing a scarf off the chair, I threw it at him. He caught it, clutching it to his chest as he flew into the air. "You gave Tink a scarf. Tink is free!" He flew out into the hallway like a little cracked out fairy, screeching, "Tink is freeeeee!" Ren looked at me. "What in the actual fuck?" I sighed. "He's obsessed with Harry Potter. I'm sorry." Tink darted back into the room, holding the scarf to his bare chest. "There is no reason to apologize when it comes to Harry Potter."" - Wicked by: Jennifer L. Armentrout

"Having each other's back is the foundation of any friendship. If your foundation is shit, your friendship is shit." - Sweet by: Tammara Webber

Book Review: This Side Of The Grave (Night Huntress #5) by: Jeaniene Frost

Release Date: February 22, 2011
from Harper
Goodreads | Amazon

"Danger waits on both sides of the grave.
Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they've triumphed over the latest battle, Cat's new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance . . .

With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous "ally"; the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war . . . to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined."

My Thoughts:

You would think that after reading five of these books back to back I would be getting tired of them but nope, all I want to do is keep going. I love Cat and Bones and all of the secondary characters.  I always knew I was going to enjoy this series but I never expected to be so consumed by it. Cat and Bones have made it so hard for me to get invested in other books because all I want to do is get back to this series.

Cat continues to be awesome and she keeps getting more and more powerful. I love how she continues to grow and step up when needed. She doesn’t want to be powerful but she accepts that she has to step up and do what needs to be done. She is fierce and crazy powerful and a badass and I love it.

I of course adore Bones. I am so obsessed with him its not even funny. Hands down my favorite vampire hero ever…. more so than Eric Northman or Shane, who previously held that title. Bones is just so easy to love. I love how much faith he has in Cat and how much he loves her and continually shows that. Their relationship is easily one of my favorite ever. I also REALLY  loved the scene where Bones beats a ghoul with that ghouls own arm... I found it incredibly funny.

As with the other books in the series, This Side of the Grave is addictive. There is non stop action and danger and it keeps you hooked. I love how these books perfectly mix action, fun, romance, and the paranormal. I’m going to be devastated when I finally finish the series.

All in all, This Side of the Grave is an awesome read. I adore this series and this book and these characters and I know they will stay with me for a long time.

Weekly Recap 11/15/2015

So life has been crazy! I am in the process of moving into my new apartment (YAY!) so things are all over the place for me. That's why I don't have any pretty pictures of my books for the post this week and also why blogging has slowed down a bit for me. But anyhoo, here are the books I've gotten these past few weeks. First I got surprise mail in Placebo Junkies. Thanks Knopf! This one doesn't sound like the right fit for me, but my sister snatched it from me immediately! Then I grabbed Whisky Kisses since it was free. I also got the pretty new paperback for Obsession. It was JLA so of course I needed it. Then my preorders arrived for November 9 and Soundless. November 9 sounds so good and I am in love with my copy of Soundless! I got the pretty one that came signed and with the limited edition book jacket so basically I've been staring at it a lot.

Mini Review: Your B&B Or Mine? by: Melissa West

Release Date: November 9, 2015
from Entangled Bliss
Goodreads | Amazon
Source: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
"All's fair in love and war, especially in the Deep South...

Savannah Hale never planned to come back to Maple Cove, Georgia. Her hometown has too many painful memories, especially of her high school sweetheart, who was killed during combat. And yet here she is…broken-hearted from her mother's death and left to deal with the Hale family legacy—Maple Cove's landmark bed and breakfast. In need of repairs and near foreclosure, she’s hanging on to the B&B by a thread.

And the man out to buy it is the man she's never been able to forgive…or forget.

Former soldier Logan Park is haunted by memories of his own. Some are of his best friend. Other are filled with longing for the girl he could never have. Now Savannah is back, and their attraction can’t be denied. But Logan has already sacrificed everything to atone for his sins, and there’s no way he’ll let himself fall for a girl who might never love again."

My Thoughts:

Melissa West just knows how to deliver a sweet romance. Your B&B Or Mine? is a very swoony and very sweet read from beginning to end. Savannah and Logan are both very likable and I love the second chance romance aspect to their story. Both of them are still hurting from the events of the past and in many ways, especially Logan, it holds them back from doing many of these things they want to do. Throw in that they are from a small town where everyone talks and well things aren't easy. Speaking of the small town, I know I could never live somewhere like this, but the small and quirky town has its charm. Throw in the fact that Logan is back to buy Savannah's newly inherited B&B and you have the combination for a very fun read. I'm getting a bit burnt out on contemporaries, but I can never pass up a Melissa West book and I'm glad I spent some time with Savannah and Logan. This is definitely a great book for when you need a good romance.
