Book Review: Every Last Breath (The Dark Elements #3) by: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Release Date: July 28, 2105
from Harlequin Teen
Goodreads | Amazon

"Some loves will last ’til your dying breath

Every choice has consequences—but seventeen-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.

Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin—the deadliest of demons—has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her…including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city—and her race—from destruction.

Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side—and then fight like hell…"

My Thoughts:

So this review is going to be pretty short and vague because I don’t want to spoil anything about the book and there is a lot that can be spoiled. Every Last Breath was a great conclusion and I devoured it. I read the book straight through because I just couldn’t put it down.

Layla has come such a long way since the first book and I truly love her character growth. She has really come into her own and become such an incredibly strong character. As for Roth and Zayne, well I really love them both so I always knew that this book was going to hurt me because one of them would get left behind. But Layla’s choice felt right and felt like the only way it could have gone. I was really glad that she made her choice so early on because I didn’t think we needed to drag out the drama anymore and I liked seeing the couple in action. And that’s all I’ll say on that.

Of course the story was good and the plot kept me guessing. There were a few twists thrown in that I loved and some that hurt my soul. And the ending isn’t just laid out; the characters have to earn it. I love that things never come easy for JLA’s characters. Her characters have to work for it.

Every Last Breath was a great conclusion and I really loved it. This is definitely one of my favorite series from JLA and I just really love the paranormal books and worlds she continually delivers.

Book Review: Up In Flames by: Nicole Williams

Release Date: December 19, 2012
Goodreads | Amazon

"One small town girl with a bright future.
One smokejumper with a dark past.
One summer that will forever change them both.
They’re going . . .

Up In Flames.

Elle’s life couldn’t possibly get any more small town than it already is. She was raised in the same home as the two generations before her were, her family owns the iconic downtown cafe, and she’s been dating the pastor’s son since she was allowed to go on her first date at sixteen.

Cole’s life couldn’t possibly get any larger. He’s tried. Roaming from town to town for the past three summers as a smokejumper, Cole dreads the thought of putting down roots. The only thing he avoids more than that is settling down with one woman, especially when there are as many willing women as there are trees in the forest he jumps out of planes to save.

Elle Montgomery’s life is going one way. And Cole Carson’s is going the opposite. There’s no reason their paths should ever intersect, even in a small town in central Washington.

But summer in the Methow Valley has other plans for Elle and Cole. After an awkward run-in at the local swimming hole, Elle tries to keep away from the guy who looks at her like she’s already lying beneath him in bed. She fails. Cole is about as successful at staying away from the girl who seems immune to his charms.

As the summer heats up, and tensions between Elle and Cole run high, he begins to realize there’s more he’s attracted to than Elle’s body, and she discovers there’s a lot more to the man that jumps out of planes into raging forest fires than meets the eye.

UP IN FLAMES is a New Adult Romance intended for mature readers due to steamy content and saucy language."

My Thoughts:

It’s no secret that Nicole Williams is one of my favorite authors, so I went in hoping to love this one and love it I did. She always hits me right in the feels. Her books always tug on the heartstrings and put me through the wringer and I absolutely love every single second of it.

Elle was always the good girl who did exactly what everyone expected of her. But that is beginning to get old for Elle and she is looking to break free. I liked Elle. She made some bad choices and I didn’t agree with some of her decisions, but I still liked her. She just felt stuck and while none of her problems may seem monumental, I still saw how she felt like she had no choice. It may not be rational, but she just needed to find herself. Her Dad controlled her entire life and it’s hard for her to finally take that control, but I was proud of her when she did.

Then we have Cole and I loooooooved Cole. I fell hard for him. He is tough and rugged but also sweet. He is a bad boy with a good heart and I absolutely loved that about him. But boy, when he got upset did he get upset. Some of the things he said out of anger made me so mad at him, but that’s Cole. It doesn’t excuse anything, but he feels everything and he feels it with everything he has.

I’m not gonna lie. The cheating aspect was not something I approved of, but I’m not one of those readers who absolutely hates it in book. I accept it as fiction and go along with the story. I didn’t like what Cole and Elle did to Logan behind his back, but I also didn’t hate them for it. Elle just didn’t want to hurt anyone and neither Cole nor Elle expected one another. So I don’t approve of it, but I could understand their decisions and I was 100% rooting for Cole and Elle to make it work.

Up In Flames brought all of the swoon and schmexy times and I ate them up. The feels were strong with this one. My heart was ripped to shreds multiple times because I cared so much for these characters. No one does feels and romance like Nicole.

Up In Flames was a great read and another wonderful book from Nicole. A great romance, not to be missed.

Release Date: January 26, 2015

Enter an unsettling world of volatile relationships, hot bikers, and even hotter sex that will have you on the edge of your seat and force you to keep a white-knuckled grip on your e-reader.

When I was ten, my father indoctrinated me into the family.

A brotherhood who would fight, protect, and give their lives for one another. A club whose ties ran thicker than blood, murkier than the dirt and grime that tainted my soul. Stronger than the bonds that connected me to my own family.

A band of brothers, where loyalty was kept and paid in a currency of blood.

When I was twenty-seven, I betrayed that brotherhood.

I’ve spent every day since running, avoiding paying back that debt.

My name is Daniel Johnson. I have betrayed everyone I ever loved.

And I’ll betray her too.

This is my story—if you’re screwed up enough to want to read it.
Warning: KICK contains graphic violence, profanity, drug use, and explicit sexual situations of a taboo nature. Intended for an 18+ audience only. Not intended for pussies.

Killer. Criminal. Sociopath. All of these words have been used to describe me, and for the longest time I believed that that’s all I was.
I’m the man you call in to clean up your mess, assuming your mess is a guy who needs a bullet to the head. I’m the man the MC calls when they want their dirty work done.
I’m the man who doesn’t feel.
Until now.
Until her.
Now my mess is a woman who won’t save herself. I’ll fight like hell to save her, but at what price to the club? And at what cost to me?
