Weekly Recap 5/31/2015

It's been a few weeks since I did a weekly recap, so the books in this weeks haul are from a couple of weeks. The freebies I grabbed are: Night After Night, Jack and Djinn, Delilah's Diary, and Eat Play Lust. I grabbed The Librarian Principle while it was on sale; sounds like a fun one. I picked up some ebooks as well. I grabbed Off Base because it is Tessa Bailey and Sophie Jordan and must therefore be awesome. I also picked up Revelry because I adore Carmen and all of her books. Then I grabbed Dark Triumph. I finally got around to reading Grave Mercy and I loved it and now I cannot wait to squeeze in Dark Triumph. For review I got Daughter of Dusk which I am very excited for. I really liked Midnight Thief and have been dying to see where the story is going. Big thanks to Disney Hyperion. I also got Until Friday Night for review. I have fallen really far behind on Abbi's books, but the feel of this one reminds me of The Vincent Boys which I loved so I am looking forward to it. Thank you Simon Pulse. Next up I got Descent which is a book I have been looking forward to for ages now! Thank you Entangled! I also got Exposed by Brighton Walsh which GAHHH I cannot wait to read. Brighton's books always rock. Thank you St Martins Griffin! Now for all of the pretties I have added to my overflowing bookshelves over the past couple of weeks. I added All Played Out by Cora Carmack. I have got to get started on this series soon. Then I added The Girl At Midnight which I got as part of my May UppercaseBox. I also got Nowhere But Here because it is Katie McGarry and therefore it needed to be on my bookshelf. I also got myself signed copies of Cruel Beauty and Crimson Bound. Cruel Beauty is an all time favorite of mine and I am reading Crimson Bound now and absolutely loving it. Then I got myself the paperback of Greetings From Sugartown. Honestly, I should have grabbed this one a while ago since I helped Carmen title the damn thing... because of that though this book will forever be incredibly special to me. Next I got a copy of Midnight Rescue. I recently read and ADORED Midnight Captive, so now I need to read the rest of this amazing series. The next couple of books were due to a Book Outlet order. Someone needs to take this site away from me because I cannot be controlled. I grabbed Fire & Ash, Between The Lines, Unraveled, Prince of Shadows, How To Lose A Bride In One Night, Once, Rise, Vampire Academy The Ultimate Guide, and Monument 14 Savage Drift.

Book Review: Midnight Captive (Killer Instincts #6) by: Elle Kennedy

Release Date: June 2, 2015
from Signet
Goodreads | Amazon
Source: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.
"“For those who enjoy their romantic suspense on the dark and steamy side,”* here’s the blisteringly sexy new novel in the Killer Instincts series by the author of Midnight Action and Midnight Pursuits...

Former CIA agent Bailey Jones has spent months trying to forget her night of passion with mercenary Sean Reilly. An elite and methodical assassin, she has no room in her life for a reckless, rule-breaking Irishman, and she’s vowed to steer clear of the tempting bad boy who lured her into his bed under false pretenses.

When Sean is implicated in the robbery of a Dublin bank, Bailey knows something isn’t right. So what if she can’t trust him? There’s no way Sean would end up on the wrong side of the law. In fact, he’s stuck in the middle of a dark and dirty conspiracy that could put his twin brother’s life at risk with one wrong move. And Bailey’s life too when she agrees to help.

As the stakes are raised and Bailey finds herself torn between two brothers, the fine line between danger and desire is crossed…and it’ll take more than a killer instinct to survive.

My Thoughts:

Well I have been missing out because clearly Elle Kennedy is awesome. I have found a new series to obsess over. After reading Midnight Captive I know I am going to have to get my hands on the rest of the series. This book is action from beginning to end, with great characters, and steamy romance. You really can’t ask for more.

Bailey is a strong woman and I loved her for that. She doesn’t need anyone to take care of her and she prides herself on that fact. She is kickass and tough and sarcastic and a great character. At times I wanted her to open up a bit, but I got it. Her life hasn’t been easy and you can’t blame her for being the way she is.

Then there is Sean and holy crap is he to die for. He is strong and smart and impulsive and caring and sweet in his own unconventional way. He is alpha without being an asshole and clearly he is devoted to Bailey. I really liked the role reversal here. Sean wanted Bailey and wanted more in terms of a relationship…. Bailey was the one who kept running from the attraction. And dayumm the accent he has is just *sigh*. I also loved watching Sean get cranky because for whatever reason it made me laugh. Sean would try to protect the people he cares about by not involving them in his problems, but then they wouldn’t have that and smacked him with a ton of nope, Sean would then get exasperated and cranky and I would chucked. Bailey especially pushed his buttons like this and I loved that.

Bailey and Sean have some serious chemistry. Those two go from fighting to well… you know…. in about three seconds and damn if it wasn’t incredibly hot. Their attraction is off the charts and they are so good together. They make such a deadly couple and that thought makes me irrationally happy. I loved these two.

This book was absolutely addictive. It was so hard to put down. I kept turning page after page and just when I thought I was coming up on a stopping point, something else would happen that would keep me turning pages. The action is crazy and I loved watching Bailey and Sean be all kick ass. I mean Bailey snapped a guy’s neck with her bare hands at one point… it was awesome.

Midnight Captive was a crazy good read and I cannot wait to make time to go back and read the rest of this series. There are so many characters I need to get better acquainted with now and I’m really bummed I didn’t discover this series sooner. So if you haven’t started this series yet, you should join me in my newest obsession.

An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both. Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down. No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.
Hand rider on handlebars, close-up

Excerpt:

From Emily's Point of View. Set up: Emily is riding a motorcycle for the very first time and she's riding it with Oz.

THE MOTORCYCLE ACCELERATES AND THE FEW inches I had established between me and Oz: gone. My body slides forward, colliding into his, and we click together like two puzzle pieces. Heat rushes up my neck and onto my cheeks. My thighs are too close to his, too tight against his body and this is way more intimate than I have been before with a guy.
Even when the two of us kissed.
Oz veers left, away from Olivia’s, away from the main road, and the entire motorcycle pitches to the side. My heart thunders and my fingers clutch not only at Oz’s belt loop, but at the material of his jeans, and his hips.
Oz glances at me over his shoulder as the bike straightens out. “Lean with it, Emily.”
Right. Lean with Oz and the bike. Got it. The narrow road curves ahead and this time when Oz and the bike tilt, I move along with it. Oz releases one of the amazingly high handlebars and massages my knee before returning his hand to the grip. Whether in reassurance or to affirm I mastered the curve I don’t know, but either way, I sit higher.
The wind whips through my hair and onto my face and I shut my eyes for a brief second and pretend that I’m flying. There’s something energizing, something hypnotic, something inside me that begs to burst out of a cage in search of freedom.
The motorcycle kicks forward and our speed increases. Beams of sunlight filter through the towering trees and green foliage blurs together as we fly over the road. From head to toe, my body vibrates with the loud growling of the powerful machine.
My knee still tingles from where Oz laid his fingers on me and I’ve never been more aware of my hands in my life. I should let go of Oz’s body, but I can’t. Belt loops weren’t enough and my fingers have somehow edged up and onto his sides. Oz is solid. Yes, definitely solid. Every inch of him that I touch is tight muscle.
Oz is a year older than me, but somehow he seems older, wiser and hotter than any other guy I’ve known. Just the way he rides his bike creates this overabundance of confidence.
Warm sensations I’ve never experienced before blossom through me. We enter another curve and I lean with him. I like how in sync I’ve become with Oz and the motorcycle. Like we’ve merged into one.
The purr of the engine deepens and Oz eases the bike to a stop. His feet hit the ground and he turns the machine off. It’s as if all sound in the world ceased, or maybe I’ve gone deaf because there’s no way anything can be this still or silent.
The wind picks up and the silence is frightened away with the roar of the trees bending. Both Oz and I shift with the flow of air and Oz doesn’t move the bike until the breeze gentles.
Oz kicks down the stand and the bike tilts, but not too much. He sets a hand over the fingers that I laced together across his stomach. Oh, hell, I’m plastic wrapped to him. I drop my head onto his shoulder and it places me closer, and closer is not what I need.
I go to unglue myself, but Oz squeezes my fingers, sending a jolt of electricity up my arms. “You okay?”
I have to clear my throat to speak and that just sucks. “Yes.”
Oz slides his fingers against mine and a fluttering occurs in my stomach. It’s a light fluttering. Ticklish even, and my survival instincts scream at me to get off this motorcycle.

"He kissed her like he owned her, and in that moment, he did. The kiss was rough and punishing, his tongue forcing her lips open and sweeping into her mouth with greedy precision. Electricity raced up Bailey's spine, red-hot and powerful, as powerful as the deep stroke's of Sean's tongue and his tight grip on her waist."

I think I have found a new obsession with this series. This book was awesome.

My Thoughts:

This book gave me a serious case of emotional whiplash and I loved every second of it. I went back and forth so much with what I wanted pretty much the entire book. Katie McGarry delivered another great read and I’m excited to see where she goes with this series.

Oz and Emily are polar opposites in the beginning and I absolutely loved watching their progression. They really kinda hate each other in the beginning, so watching them grow together was really awesome. Their varying perspectives is probably both my favorite and least favorite part of the book. I loved getting two sides to the story, but getting those two sides is what gave me emotional whiplash. I would read Emily’s perspective and completely agree and see myself nodding along. Then I would get to Oz’s perspective and completely agree with him. The problem was that in the beginning they both wanted completely different things and it made my head spin. Hence the whiplash. I loved the whiplash though. And their chemistry together is insane and I absolutely loved them as a couple and loved that they brought out the best in each other.

This book had so many secrets and lies and it kept me invested. I may have begged my bloggy Wifey multiple times to TELL ME ALL THE THINGS, because while I had good guesses that turned out to be right, the anticipation was killing me. Good thing my Wifey is strong and didn’t bend to my incessant “I NEED TO KNOW ALL THE THINGS” texts. In the end I loved unraveling the pieces slowly and finding them out was a ton of fun.

My only slight issue is with the adults in this book, because dayumm they all aggravated me at times. Except maybe Olivia, I adored her. But the rest of them made me crazy. So many secrets and lies and nobody wants to come clean. And so many times they acted like children. I may have yelled through my iPad at them to realize they are the adults in this situation. But this also added something great to the story. It showed that people make mistakes and that sometimes it is up to the next generation to learn from them.

All in all, Nowhere But Here was a great read and is one that can be devoured. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next.
