Book Review: The Darkest Flame (Roadmap To Your Heart #1) by: Christina Lee

Release Date: August 17, 2015
Goodreads | Amazon
Source: I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.
"From the author of There You Stand, a new male/male romance about an errant motorcycle recruit and the captivating bartender who sends his wheels spinning down an all too tempting road.

Vaughn O’Keefe has been part owner of the Hog’s Den for years. Privy to plenty of Disciples of the Road business, he’s never been more ruffled as when a new recruit named “Smoke” walks through the door. Something about the man gets his blood pumping, but he knows to keep his preferences under wraps around the club.

“Smoke” Callahan has done a couple of rehab stints and is finally clean, thanks to help from the Disciples. He’s on the right path and isn’t about to get sidetracked, no matter how much the guy who manages the bar gets beneath his skin. Besides, his last relationship with a man left him scared, alone, and with a nightmare of an addiction.

When the Hog’s Den becomes shorthanded, and Smoke is ordered to help out the one man he can’t have, his longing for the bartender reaches blistering proportions. Vaughn figures a night together should be enough to satisfy their mutual attraction. But neither banks on just how scorching hot it might be.

As Smoke’s past unravels and the one person he hopes never to lay eyes on again messes with all he holds sacred, it’s time to involve the Disciples. Problem is, he’ll have to risk his membership, his heart, and his own hide to keep everyone he cares about safe."

My Thoughts:

Christina Lee knows how to write an addictive book! The Darkest Flame was yet another great read from Christina. This one was a bit grittier than some of her other books, but given that there is an MC club that is to be expected and honestly I loved the grit and darker tones. Smoke and Vaughn had a fantastic story to tell.

I really liked both Vaughn and Smoke as individuals and together. Both of them have pretty rough pasts and are keeping their preferences a secret from everyone close to them. That has to wear on them and it really hurt my heart watching them hide who they are. I wanted them to be happy in the worst way.

As with any Christina Lee book, this one made my heart melt and was both sweet and sexy. She knows how to deliver a great love story and continues to do so with every single book. Vaughn and Smoke fit together so well and complemented each other perfectly. I also really liked how they communicated. Despite all the crazyness going on and the secrets, they were pretty open with one another and direct in what they wanted. I liked that they were able to communicate so well.

Now this book takes place in an MC world, granted the MC club is trying to get clean but still it's an MC club, so naturally there is danger. The suspense angle was really good and I enjoyed that part of the story as much as I enjoyed the romance. I was so worried for the characters and I kept trying to figure out ways to make it better and I kept coming up short. I love that Christina kept me on my toes the entire book.

All in all, The Darkest Flame is a really good read. It has lovable characters, a great romance, sexy times, and a suspenseful plot. You really cannot go wrong with this book!

I grabbed my hold of keys and tried not to slam my way out the door. I didn’t know why the hell I was so rattled by Vaughn tonight. I mean, I had been every night, but something about the idea of him being with somebody else right in front of my eyes, made me crazy with need. Need that it felt like only he could fulfill.

As soon as I got to my bike I realized I’d left my cut in the break room. I stood outside attempting to rein in my uneven pulse. I didn’t know what the fuck had come over me.
Breathing more steadily, I stepped back through the door only to find the bar empty. I’d just grab my leather vest and leave him in peace.

“I forgot my…” I stopped in my tracks because Vaughn stood motionless in the middle of the floor, veins bulging in his neck, as if he’d implode at the slightest touch.
He was always moving and talking with a restless energy in this bar so his stillness was a bit startling.

“Hey.” I gingerly placed my hand on his shoulder. “I’m sorry if I—”

There was instant recoil, as if he were attempting to contain the vortex of tension between us by vacuuming it in through his skin.

He twisted toward me, his eyes latching onto mine, right before I was slammed against the door.

The wind was practically knocked out of me as Vaughn sank his weight against my smaller frame. We were groin to groin, heartbeat to heartbeat.

“Fuck, Vaughn, you’re—” Heaving breaths surged through my nostrils. “I was going to suggest a truce.”

“Yeah?” he mumbled, his gaze fastening on my mouth. “What sort of truce?”

  1. The lovable characters and great romance sounds like it would be enjoyable

  2. I am not the biggest fan of MC novels, but I have to admit, it has a certain appeal and it's quite hard to say NO to these bikers.

    1. This one isn't really an MC book though... it doesn't really circle around that, it's just a part of it which was nice. This one is more romance than anything else.

  3. I've only read like one MC book, which was Katie McGarry's and altho I liked it, I didn't love it bc of that MC vibe. Idk, maybe that's not my thing.

  4. I haven't read anything by this author, I believe. But it sounds like I must! I love gritty books and ones that'll melt my heart as well! And I'm very curious about it being in the MC world. That makes me really interested in reading it!

    Wonderful review

  5. I love the MC aspect of this one; and while it's a bit too steamy for me, Mom put it straight on her TBR. Lol. I'm so glad you enjoyed this! Awesome review! :-)

    Mckenzie <3

  6. Well this might not be my kind of read, but I'll make sure that Glass hears about it. It's totally her style, MC and darker reads that screams Glass. I'm glad you enjoyed this one. Great review :)

  7. I really like MC books! I like that darker, grittier tone so I know this will be a good read for me. I'm hoping to start it next! :D Great review hun!

  8. I love this author. She writes such great books.
