"Now that Nikki has rescued Jack, all she wants is to be with him and graduate high school. But Cole tricked Nikki into feeding off him, and she’s begun the process of turning into an Everliving herself... which means she must feed on a Forfeit soon — or die.

Terrified for her survival, Nikki and Jack begin a desperate attempt to reverse the process using any means possible. Even Cole, who they expected to fight them at every turn, has become an unlikely ally — but how long can it last? Nikki needs to feed on Cole to survive, Cole needs Nikki to gain the throne in the Everneath, Jack needs Nikki because she is everything to him — and together, they must travel back to the Underworld to undo Nikki’s fate and make her mortal once more. But Cole isn’t the only one with plans for Nikki: the Queen has not forgotten Nikki’s treachery, and she wants her destroyed for good. Will Nikki be forced to spend eternity in the Underworld, or does she have what it takes to bring down the Everneath once and for all?

In this stunning conclusion to the Everneath trilogy, Brodi Ashton evokes the resiliency of the human spirit and the indomitable power of true love."

My Thoughts:

So fair warning, this review is going to be super ranty. Ranty reviews aren’t usually my style, because most of the time I focus and lock on to the things I like with a book, but with this book there are just things I cannot let go. My goodreads status updates are filled with my exasperation. This conclusion just let me down in a lot of ways. Overall, I’m glad I continued the series and saw it through to the end, but I can’t say I’m overly thrilled with the way things went down.

At the heart of the story, this book is a romance and I do admit that the romance is super sweet. Jack and Nikki are adorable together and part of me was rooting for them, but the problem is a much bigger part of me is forever Team Go With Cole and Rule The Everneath. I have been from the get go. Maybe it is my inner diva that is drawn to the Queen title or maybe I just really like Cole, whatever it is, Jack is the reason that cannot be. Well, personally I can think of a ton of way it can be, but whatever. So while I love Jack and Nikki, there is always a part of me that can't get 100% on board.

But aside from that, I mean the story isn’t really a love triangle because we all know who the real love interest is; I do have one other problem with Jack and Nikki. I like both of them, I do. Nikki can be annoying and Jack is kinda blah, but I don’t hate them and I did want them to have a happily ever after…. BUT… yes there is a but… I think I like them better as individuals than I do as a couple. I feel like together they are just way too co-dependent. Yes they love each other, that is obvious, but since when does that mean they can’t do anything without the other one. I mean, the one time Nikki does go to do something without Jack all hell breaks loose and well that’s the last time she does anything alone. It’s just proving that no Nikki cannot do things alone. And it kinda made me mad, because I like Nikki best in Everbound when she was acting alone to save Jack. Yes, Cole was with her then but let’s be honest, Nikki was the only one on that mission for Jack and that was when she was at her strongest. Now that Jack is back, I feel like she just reverted to leaning on him for everything and I don’t like that.

But even moving past those things, the things that tore me apart the most were with Cole. I am so damn cranky over Cole and I’m heartbroken. My favorite character in this series was ruined in this book and when something like that happens it’s just hard to enjoy the book overall. Long story short… Cole was turned into a tool and nothing more and I hated that. I’m trying not to spoil anything, but I’m so frustrated over this and I need to discuss it so spoiler tag.

Okay clearly my ranting is getting out of control, so I will try to rein it in now. I’m sure after reading this review you’re thinking I hated this book, but that is really not the case. I did like it. It was predictable and sometimes things came too easy, but I enjoyed it. Overall this has been a good series and it is a fun twist on mythology. Evertrue was a solid conclusion to the series, with no loose ends. Unfortunately for me there were some things I just couldn’t move past and when I go to talk about the book those are the only things I can think of to talk about. I enjoyed the book and I was invested in the characters and I am so glad I finished this series, but there will forever be a Cole shaped piece of my heart that has been crushed.

  1. Awwww. *hugs* I'm sorry hun. I know how much that spoiler killed you and it did very much feel like a plot device and nothing more. I do see where you're coming from about Nikki and Jack being a little co-dependent on one another. This was definitely not my favorite book, but I was pretty satisfied with how it ended overall.

  6. I get some of what you are saying. I haven't read this series (unsure if I will), but I have encountered characters who are better apart, as individuals, then together. I enjoyed your ranty review! It was fun to read :) Sorry to read about Cole though.

    Wonderful review my friend!

  7. I do have to admit this series got progressively worse, but I still liked it overall. And the covers are so pretty, lol. I have to agree, I didn't like how the whole Cole thing turned out. Great review!
