Release Date: December 23, 2014
from Disney Hyperion

Source: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
"The second installment in the epic Starbound trilogy introduces a new pair of star-crossed lovers on two sides of a bloody war.

Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met.

Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet's rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents.

Rebellion is in Flynn's blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.

Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war"

My Thoughts:

I’m not going to lie, going into this book I was a bit bummed that it wasn’t Lilac and Tarver, as I am sure most people were. I loved those two and I would have loved to get more of them front and center. But the more I think about it, the more I am glad that This Shattered World focused on a different couple. One because we got to visit a whole new planet and see how far reaching certain Companies are and also because that means Lilac and Tarver are happy and I don’t have to see them go through any more drama. This Shattered World was a great addition to the Starbound series.

Our main gal Jubilee Chase is a tough cookie. Honestly, it took me a bit to warm up to her because she was so tough. She doesn’t show emotion, not even to herself, so as a reader it is hard to connect to her. But as she opens up bit by bit I really came to like this crazy, tough, and super strong girl. She is a great leader and a great person and she is willing to make the tough choices and I admire her so much for that.

Then there is Flynn Cormack, who is basically Jubilee’s opposite in every way. Other than her being a soldier and him a rebel they are just polar opposites. Jubilee jumps first and ask questions later where Flynn wants to discuss and then act. She is tough and loud while he is strong and silent. Both of them are strong and good people, just in very different ways. What brings them together is that they are both willing to put others before themselves and they are willing to work together for the betterment of others. And then once they get to know one another they realize they may not be all that different where it really matters. The romance is such a slow burn and these two start off hating each other. It was so awesome watching them come together and realize how awesome they can be together.

This Shattered World gets off to a bit of a slow start and it was a bit tough for me to connect This Shattered World to These Broken Stars. They just seemed not at all connected in the beginning and it was hard for me to get invested immediately. But then you get to a point and all of a sudden everything makes sense, you see the connection and it is basically a mind blown moment. It was pretty epic. And then all of a sudden Tarver is there and you want to hug him and tell him how much you missed him. And then you see Lilac and your heart is all happy and just *sigh*.

All in all, This Shattered World is a good addition to the Starbound series and I cannot wait to see how everything comes to a head in the final book. Lilac and Tarver may still be my favorite, but Jubilee and Flynn are a great pair too. And because I have to mention it… those covers are amazing and the insides live up to the amazing exterior.

  1. I still need to read this series. I'm glad you've enjoyed it. It's always great when something you weren't sure about ends up being good.

  2. I haven't read the first, but glad to hear its a good addition even if a bit slow at first

  3. YAYAYAYAY! I can't wait to read the third book! I knew this series would be a companion series before even reading These Broken Stars in 2013 so I wasn't too disappointed about this one... this one was awesome! I'm glad you enjoyed it as well. Hopefully the third book is super amazing (as we expect)!

    Fabulous review, Teresa :)

  4. Oh good point! I was really bummed too! But I love that you said that. We can imagine Lilac and Tarver happy and together and that works for me! I really need to read this one- I can't believe I haven't already! Soon. Especially after your review. *hugs*

  5. I have yet to read the first two books in the series. I have them. They just get moved around a lot, but I really should get to it before the third book comes out.

  6. Glad that after Jubilee slowly started to open up, you were able to connect with her more! It also makes me very excited and happy to read that this story connects with Broken Stars! That is really awesome! I can't wait to pick this one up!

AMAZING REVIEW! * Epic high five*

  7. Agreed. I wanted more of L&T. This book was def not as good as the first, for me at least. I couldn't really connect to either character or their romance. I get their connection to the overall story, but still. Glad you were able to enjoy it though. And yes, the covers are so gorgeous.

I love getting comments and appreciate every single one of them! It always brightens my day =]

This is an award free blog. I truly appreciate the thought but I simply do not have the time. Comments are an award all on their own =]
