Book Review: Salt & Stone (Fire & Flood #2) by: Victoria Scott

Release Date: February 24, 2015 from Scholastic
Goodreads | Amazon
Source: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.
"What would you do to save someone you love?

In Fire & Flood, Tella Holloway faced a dangerous trek through the jungle and across the desert, all to remain a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed for a chance at obtaining the Cure for her brother. She can't quit--she has to win the race, save Cody, and then fight to make sure the race stops before it can claim any more lives. In the next legs of the race, across the ocean and over mountains, Tella will face frostbite, sharks, avalanche, and twisted new rules in the race.

But what if the danger is deeper than that? How do you know who to trust when everyone's keeping secrets? What do you do when the person you'd relied on most suddenly isn't there for support? How do you weigh one life against another?

The race is coming to an end, and Tella is running out of time, resources, and strength. At the start of the race there were one hundred twenty-two Contenders. As Tella and her remaining friends start the final part of the race, just forty-one are left--and only one can win."

My Thoughts:

Holy guacamole did this sequel deliver. No sophomore slump to be found here. Salt & Stone is crazy addictive from beginning to end. It is action packed and fast moving and so hard to put down.

I have to start with Tella because I friggin love Tella. I can’t even begin to express the amount of love I have for her after reading this book. She has grown so much over the course of two books. But what I love most about Tella is how realistic she is. Tella could be any of us. She doesn’t come into this tournament kicking ass and taking names. She comes in terrified and not in any way equipped to deal with this. But she steps up to the challenge. She becomes strong and she learns that she has strength inside her and that she doesn’t need to rely on anyone. Tella learns to stand on her own in this one and she makes everyone around her listen to her and her opinions. Even Guy. I really admired her for this. She didn’t just follow his lead because she likes him. She made him take notice of her and acknowledge that she is capable. She still likes him and cares for him but she doesn’t let him coddle her. I could go on and on about this, but I’ll stop myself here.

Guy, for me, was a bit frustrating in this one. He needed to cut all the hot and cold messages. I got where he was coming from and I understood why he did some of the things he did, but they still made me crazy all the same.

I really love the great cast of secondary characters this series delivers. My favorite probably being Harper. That girl is so tough and I love it. She has dealt with such tragedy and she is pushing forward and I have to admire that. I really love all the strong girls in this book. We also get to meet some new characters and I’m curious to see how one in particular will play out. Oh, and of course the pandoras were as lovable as ever.

I also really enjoyed the pace of Salt & Stone. This book just keeps going. It moves along so fast and keeps your adrenaline pumping. I also really liked how short the chapters are. It’s like opening a bag of candy. You take one and then just keep going. I loved how addictive it was.

Salt & Stone was a great follow up to Fire & Flood. I think I liked it even more than the first book actually. This series is continually getting better and I really cannot wait to see where it goes next.

  6. I love the unique names of these characters! Guy is being such a guy with all the hot and cold, though! lol Really happy to hear there was no sophomore slump here -- even that it surpassed book one for you! The pacing, the secondary characters, and the bag-of-candy short chapters seal the deal for me. Brilliant review, lovey!! xo
