Book Review: Wicked (A Wicked Trilogy #1) by: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Release Date: December 8, 2014
Goodreads | Amazon

"Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul."

My Thoughts:

As this is JLA, I’m sure this review will not be a surprise to anyone who knows me. Once again she has created a crazy world within our world, this time with fae. I had high hopes for this one since I normally love fae books, so I had a feeling that the combination of JLA and fae would be a win for me and I was right.

Ivy is awesome. She is a kickass heroine, but she is still vulnerable in some ways. She is strong yes, but there are things that scare her and she doesn’t let many people in. Given her past you can’t really blame her. She was a fun character too so reading from her perspective was great. I loved the way she thought and she was very witty and snarky, so naturally we got along just fine.

And then we have Ren. Holy hotness, Ren is awesome. He is very charming and sweet and just really swoony. I also love that he is such a genuinely good guy. He isn’t a bad boy or a player or any of those clich├ęs. Ren is simply good. He is funny and witty and sweet and has no problem telling you what he wants or how he feels. He is determined and just goes for what he wants. JLA creates wonderful guys and Ren was no exception.

JLA also delivers a great cast of secondary characters: both good and bad. My favorite of them was Tink. Tink is my spirit animal as evidenced by his love of Harry Potter. I loved Tink so so much. He was incredibly funny and I hope we get more of him in the sequel. Some other secondary characters though needed to be smacked upside the head *cough*TheOrder*cough*. They kinda drove me crazy.

Aside from great characters, Wicked also delivered one heck of a storyline. It was action packed and kept you on the edge of your seat. It really keeps you guessing and wondering who can and cannot be trusted. The writing is good and it flows well. It also has the characteristic humor and wit JLA is known for. I truly appreciated the Ghost Adventures reference (my sister and I are addicted to this show). It also delivers one heck of a romance. The tension between Ren and Ivy is off the charts and I loved watching them go back and forth. It was sweet and sexy and swoony and just everything I want in a romance.

I also want to take a second to acknowledge that it’s new adult paranormal. I think these genres just come together so well and I love seeing new adult branching away from solely contemporary more and more. I love that it had a paranormal feel with fae and danger but it was still solidly rooted in the real world. It just had such an original flair to it that makes it a great read.

All in all, Wicked is a great read and one it would be a shame to miss.
