"Every touch has its price

Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.

But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…"

Nicole Speaks:
When I first started reading this book my mind was set – Roth was my favorite and I did not care what Zayne did in this book, I was convinced that wouldn’t change.  But I was worried… I knew that people aren’t as insanely stubborn as I am.  Once I pick someone I am nearly impossible to convince otherwise, and I usually despise whoever is in the way of how I want the book to end.  But what if people’s opinions changed and became huge fans of Zayne and voted for him in JLA’s vote to decide who Layla will pick?  This book drove me insane in the best way possible.

Before I go on an insane #TeamRoth and #RothOrRiot rant let me just say that I loved this book.  This might be my favorite JLA series so far (and that’s really saying something since I adore Daemon… I mean who doesn’t!?)  Layla’s little love triangle isn’t like most.  She doesn’t know what to do about these two boys, but she realizes there’s much more important things going on than who to date. Every aspect of this book was incredible and I don’t think I’ll be able to wait until the next one comes out!

***Now time for my rant… So prepare yourselves!***

From the very beginning when you see Layla and Zayne’s relationship growing I was worried.  I understood them, and I could see people falling in love with Zayne.  He is strong, protective, and he clearly loves Layla… Plus he’s incredibly good looking, but he has nothing on the Prince of Hell!  Every mistake that Roth made, convinced me that people would fall more in love with Zayne and well that was just not okay.

I knew who I wanted Layla to end up with the second she met Roth.  Every time he pushed Layla away I wanted to cry because I knew there had to be so much more to the story than Roth simply not caring about Layla.  All of his actions contradicted themselves.  I had hope that Roth would come through and prove just how perfect he is for Layla.

There might be a lot of people that disagree with me because of Layla and Zayne’s past, but I don’t care.  I can imagine Layla ending up with Roth, them being happy together, and Zayne being able to stay her friend.  Yes it would be hard and yes it would take time, but I can’t imagine a situation where she picks Zayne and Roth is able to remain in her life.  And well, a life or a story without Roth just seems heartbreaking.

I know that I have a tendency to be crazy when it comes to book boyfriends, but I just know that I would not be able to enjoy it nearly as much knowing Roth didn’t end up with Layla. Picking the “wrong guy” in other books has completely ruined them for me.  I adore all of Jennifer Armentrout’s books and I would hate for that to happen with Layla’s story.  So for the next few months that I know will seem like forever I will have to hope that people love Roth even half as much as I do and voted for him.

No matter what happens in the next book, I am sure that JLA will make me understand Layla’s decision, even if I completely hate it.  These past two books have been so incredible that the next one is easily the book I am most excited for next year!  July can’t come fast enough!

  1. Omg this book nearly killed me too! But unlike other people it made me hate Zayne. I mean how can anyone love him when he knew what was happening with the whole Roth thing and still went after Layla? It was very unfair for Roth and my heart broke so much for him, and I agree with you, this series would be totally ruined for me if Layla picks Zayne.

    Great review!

  2. So I loved Zayne more from the start. But then I loved Roth too. And I couldn't decide. I am resigned to Roth getting the girl BUT I worry about Zayne. What will happen to him. He doesn't love what's her face. That can't be a second prize, imo. I just want him to be okay too. Then I can be content with Roth getting the girl. Just sayin'

  3. Speaking of Armentrout, there's a new book that came out that reminds me so much of her Luxe series. Under Different Stars, have you guys heard of that before?

    1. I have heard of it, but I haven't really looked into it... I'll have to check it out though if you say it is like her Lux books. Thanks!

  4. Nicole, I love that you're stubbornly loyal over your book boyfriend. :) I have yet to meet Roth or Zayne but from what I've read, I think I'll be a Roth girl, too. Thanks for the Roth rant. It was fun!
