"From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Sweet Thing and Nowhere But Here comes a deeply emotional contemporary romance about the second chances waiting beyond the shattered dreams of youth.

Under the bright arena lights of a rodeo show, young Avelina Belo falls for a handsome cowboy with a larger-than-life personality. After a whirlwind courtship, she happily moves away from her family in northern California and settles into married life with her cowboy on a seven-thousand-acre cattle ranch in Montana. One freak accident later, Avelina’s hopes for the future come to an end.

Nate Myers graduated from UCLA medical school at the top of his class, ready to follow in the footsteps of his father, a superstar cardiothoracic surgeon. Six years later, Nate’s career is being ruined by a malpractice suit. Questioning himself for the first time, he retreats to a Montana cattle ranch to visit his uncle and gain perspective. There, he meets a beautiful young woman named Avelina who teaches him more than he ever knew about matters of the heart."

My Thoughts:

This book was very different from what I was expecting. I can’t really get into why, but it definitely surprised me. I could not put this book down and it was very addictive. Renee’s writing is gorgeous and it just flows and will keep your turning pages.

Ava and Nate are very interesting characters. I’m not going to lie, I struggled with both of them for different reasons at different times, but I’m not going to get into that. Why? Because at the end of it all, I was rooting for them and I wanted them to make it work. Both of them have their flaws and both are overcoming monumental life events and together they start to make sense of what they want out of life. They are both really clueless as to what to do with the new relationship and it shows. They make mistakes and do stupid things but it is so clear that they are meant for one another.

After The Rain was the kind of book I could not put down, but it also made me crazy at times. There were certain things that really frustrated me. I can’t elaborate because of spoilers, but again I don’t want to dwell on this because despite all of that the book really grabbed me. And I figure if a book grabs me that much I must have enjoyed it. The writing was gorgeous and Renee really knows how to tell a beautiful, emotional, and heartbreaking story. She knows just how to put your heart through the wringer; in the best way of course.

All in all, After The Rain wasn’t what I was expecting but it was still a good read.

  6. Omg, I just read a book that provoked similar emotions. It's so funny when you can't exactly pinpoint why a book drives you crazy, it just does. And yet, you continue to read it because something compels you to. Lol. I'm happy you were moved by this book in the end though. Great review!
