Bookish Birthday Bash Part Two: Interview With Author Carrie Butler and Her Awesome Character Cole Blake

To celebrate my 25th birthday this year, I am having a Bookish Birthday Bash weekend on the blog! I have invited three very special authors to drop by and celebrate with me. These authors all hold a very special place in my heart and I am thrilled they have agreed to celebrate with me. For day two (my actualy birthday *spins*) I have Carrie Butler on the blog to answer a few questions and Cole from her Mark of Nexus series tagged along to answer some as well.

So I would like to welcome Carrie Butler author of the Mark of Nexus series to the blog today to answer a few questions. Oh and look I see you brought Cole with you as well! How exciting! I think everyone knows Cole is my favorite. So welcome, both of you.
CARRIE: Thanks, Teresa! I didn’t so much ‘bring him’ as he followed me, but what are you going to do? I didn’t trust him alone in the parking lot.

COLE:  *ignores Carrie and kisses Teresa’s hand* Well, if it isn’t the president of my fan club. Tell me, are you ready to receive your membership perks?

CARRIE: Easy, ladykiller. We’re on a tight schedule here. I do have a book to finish.

COLE:  So you keep reminding me...

Alright ,so to start this off I'm going to ask one of my favorite questions; and this one is for both of you. If you had to describe yourself in two words, what would they be and why?
COLE:  Charming badass—self explanatory.

CARRIE: Sleep deprived.  Same.

Now describe one another in two words?
CARRIE: Surprisingly complex.

COLE: Has. Boobs.

CARRIE: Can I retract my answer?

So Carrie, what inspired this series? I know I loved it and was so excited because it was New Adult and paranormal so I'd love to know where you got the idea.
CARRIE: Strength—and ultimately, the whole Mark of Nexus series—started as a "what if" scenario. What if a unique, supernatural race lived among us? What if there was more than one? How would the world stay in balance?

I listened to music while I plotted out a few points, and the 2005 Five for Five cover of "All I Know" came on. Oh man. The lyrics—especially the first few lines about bruising each other—really struck me. As I considered them, the figurative meaning morphed into a more literal scenario. How tortured a man with uncontrollable strength must be... falling in love for the first time... unable to touch the woman he loves without hurting her...

That's how the romance element fell into place. ;)

Which has been your favorite book to write? Which was the hardest?
CARRIE: Honesty (Mark of Nexus #2.5) was actually my favorite book to write, and I’m not just saying that because Cole’s fidgeting with his pocketknife. For some reason, his character comes so easily—

CARRIE: That’s not what I meant!

COLE:  *snorts*

CARRIE: Anyway, I’d say the hardest book to write has definitely been Loyalty (Mark of Nexus #3). Between the distractions and the pressure, I feel like I’m constantly rewriting...

As I know you are very active in the New Adult community, where do you see the genre going in the future and how would you like to see it evolve?
CARRIE: The vast majority of NA readers got hooked on the category via mainstream contemporary, but now I think they’re ready to see that age group navigate other favorite genres and niches—paranormal battles on college campuses, long distance romances in the military, political thrillers with interns, etc. Onward and upward!

Now for you Cole. We all know you love the spotlight, so what were your initial thoughts when you found out you were getting your own novella?
COLE: I believe my exact words were, “About [censored] time!”

Cole, can you give us any insight as to what is coming next for you?
COLE: If I play my cards right, a leggy redhead.

CARRIE: Cole.

COLE: Fine, fine. Let’s just say I’m going to lend my talents to this resistance we’ve got brewing. One way or another, this shit’s coming to an end so we can move on.

You have some pretty cool powers. What is the best thing about being a Dynari? The worst?
COLE: The best part is being able to get out of difficult situations. About to grab me? I’ll be down the street, flicking you off, before you can twitch a muscle. Catch me off guard? That stab wound will seal itself up before you can figure out a place to stash my body.

CARRIE: Can I try the stabbing thing?

COLE: Maybe later. Anyway, the worst part is the monotony—but I guess that’s specific to my gift. Everything passes by so slowly. Seconds can be agonizing, especially when I’m waiting for something.

So these next couple are for both of you. What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
CARRIE: Don’t take any wooden nickels.

COLE: What does that even mean?

CARRIE: I have no idea.

COLE: Well, my best piece of advice came from the Boy Scouts.

CARRIE: You were never a boy scout.

COLE: So? I’m always prepared for shit.

CARRIE: Says the man with a ski-mask in his glove compartment.

If you were stuck on a deserted island and could only have one book with you, what would you want it to be?
CARRIE: The Bible—because I’d be praying hard to get off that island! Have you seen the things crawling around those places? Yuck. Not my idea of paradise.

COLE: *sighs* Once again, you’ve overcomplicated things...

CARRIE: Oh, I can’t wait for this explanation.

COLE: All I’d need is a really thick omnibus. The first third would be a survival guide, the next third would be the Kama Sutra—you know, to pass time with the native women—and the last third could be whatever. I’d rip those pages out to burn at night.

CARRIE: I overcomplicate things?!

If you could have dinner with one famous person who would it be?
COLE: Batman.

CARRIE: Not real.

COLE: Teresa didn’t specify.

CARRIE: *pauses to consider this* Fine, I’d have dinner with Batman and Cole.

Alright and one more. If you had to describe the Mark of Nexus series in two sentences or less what would you say?
CARRIE: A unique take on paranormal, with original mythology, three-dimensional characters, and a complex struggle for power. (Dun, dun, dunnnn!)

COLE: The tale of an attractive man named Cole and other, less important, people.

This or that:
Coke or Pepsi?
COLE: Will I get paid for this endorsement?
CARRIE: No preference, as long as it’s caffeine free.

Chocolate or vanilla?
COLE: “Chocolate and vanilla... swirrrrrl... ”
CARRIE: Have you been watching OITNB on my Netflix account again?
COLE: Stop judging me.

Pink or blue?
COLE: Pink. *silence*  I said, stop judging me!

Drama or action?
CARRIE and COLE:  Action.

Dogs or cats?
COLE: Pigs.

Day or night?
CARRIE: Night. I’m semi-nocturnal.
COLE: Ditto. Plus, it’s easier to escape under the cover of darkness.

Winter or summer?
CARRIE: “Oh, I don’t know why, but I’ve always loved the idea of summer...and sun...and all thi—”
COLE: I can’t quote lesbian prisoners, but you can quote animated snowmen?
CARRIE: How did you know I was quoting an animated snowman?
COLE: No comment.

Thank you both for stopping by today. It was a pleasure to have you both here. Cole, you can come back whenever you like *winks*
COLE: You hear that, boss? She told you to get out.

CARRIE: That is not even remotely what she said.

COLE: Plain as f-in’ day. She said I can come back whenever and blatantly left you out. I think you pissed her off.

CARRIE:  She was flirting with you, nimrod.

COLE: Well, obviously. I meant a threesome is off the table, thanks to you.

CARRIE: This escalated fast.

COLE: Not that it matters. Rach won’t let me. I asked before we came here.

CARRIE: Why would that even cross your... never mind. I don’t want to know.

*sigh* Cole... what are we going to do with you... wait don't answer that, I'm sure you have an inappropriate answer of some kind. Thank you again BOTH of you!
