Book Review: Siege & Storm (The Grisha #2) by: Leigh Bardugo

Release Date: June 4, 2013
from Henry Holt & Co
Goodreads | Amazon

"Darkness never dies.

Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land. She finds starting new is not easy while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. She can’t outrun her past or her destiny for long.

The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling’s game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her--or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm."

My Thoughts:

This book was so good! I adored Shadow and Bone but I think I enjoyed Siege and Storm even more. I really cannot believe it took me so long to pick this book up! But on the bright side, my wait for Ruin and Rising is much much shorter now. Siege and Storm was everything I want when I pick up a high fantasy novel, but it is also different and that is what makes it great.

I love Alina! She has come such a long way and she really came into her own in this book. She is determined to save Ravka and bring the Darkling down and I have to admire that determination. With that though, Alina did make some choices that made me shake my head. It is clear she is not the same girl she once was and not all of her new traits are particularly great. She begins to border on power hungry and obsessed, which is just never a good thing. Also, secrets are bad!

Then we have Mal and guys I adore Mal! He has given up so much for Alina and it is so clear he loves her. However, it is also clear that he misses the Alina she used to be. Things are not easy for these two but I really think they need to fight for it. I loved that we got much more Mal in this one, because he is really one of my favorites. He is not without his flaws and there were times I was pretty mad at him, but in the end I do get it. Guys I seriously ship Mal and Alina so hard… so hard that I am willing to use the word ship… which I never do.

The next character I have to discuss is The Darkling. I know there are a ton of people who absolutely love him, but for me personally I do not see the appeal. He threatens Alina too many times for me to be okay with it and he makes it known that he is willing to sacrifice her for his own gains. That is not love, he does not love her, maybe in his own sick and twisted way he thinks he does, but it’s not normal. Because so many people love him, I was kinda expecting him to have some big gesture or moment during this book that would make me doubt or change my mind, but that never happened. To me, I really just think he is a villain.

This book will hook you from the very beginning and then the ending just leaves you dying for more! I have so many questions and I am seriously worried about how this is all going to play out. I had such a hard time putting this book down. The world is so dangerous and intriguing and like none I have ever read before. It has action, adventure, magic, politics, and of course love.

Siege and Storm is a wonderful follow up to Shadow and Bone. It is high fantasy at its finest and is not to be missed by fans of the genre!

  1. Ooh, now I really want to get to Shadow & Bone!! I'm so intrigued by this story. And I'm giggling over you saying it took you so long to pick up Siege & Storm when I've had Shadow & Bone since it released! *ha* Nice review, Teresa!

  2. I actually liked S&B more than S&S, but I still loved it. I seriously can't wait to read R&R, which won't be until late July or August. Sigh. School!!! I think I just like the dark/villainous side to The Darkling, lol. I'm totally on Team Mal. My heart broke for them in this book.

  3. So many people absolutely love this series! I really need to give it a try at some point.
    Thanks for the review, Teresa!

  4. Fantasy at its finest, how can I not read this after that?! Btw, that line is blurb worthy ;)

  5. I still haven't read Shadow and Bone even though I have both books on my shelf. I need to get to them asap. I'm so glad you enjoyed this one and I really hope you'll enjoy Ruin and Rising :) Great review :)

  6. I love when a book leaves you dying for more! I really have been meaning to start this series! I do love the sound of it and I really want to meet this Mal character! The storyline also sounds really interesting! I'll have to pick it up once I finish a few other series I'm working on!

Butterflying awesome review, my friend!! *hugs*

  7. The character growth in Alina sounds great. I have been eyeing this series for a long time and need to make some time for it.

  8. Awesome review! I'm going to read Siege and Storm soon. I loved Shadow and Bone, but decided to wait on reading Siege and Storm until the final book was out so that I could just binge read them. So excited to pick up Siege and Storm now.

  9. I'm nervous to start book 3. I'm Team Mal so I hope it ends well for me...

  10. I haven't started this series yet but I hear so many good things about it. Glad you enjoyed.

  11. I am looking forward to this series. I have the first two books, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Must make time.
