Book Review: City of Heavenly Fire (The Mortal Instruments #6) by: Cassandra Clare

Release Date: May 27, 2014
from Margaret K. McElderry
Goodreads | Amazon

"In this dazzling and long-awaited conclusion to the acclaimed Mortal Instruments series, Clary and her friends fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary's own brother.

Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Infernal Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures out of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell.

The embattled Shadowhunters withdraw to Idris - but not even the famed demon towers of Alicante can keep Sebastian at bay. And with the Nephilim trapped in Idris, who will guard the world against demons?

When one of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known is revealed, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec must flee - even if their journey takes them deep into the demon realms, where no Shadowhunter has set foot before, and from which no human being has ever returned...

Love will be sacrificed and lives lost in the terrible battle for the fate of the word in the thrilling final installment of the classic urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments!"

My Thoughts:

I have been looking forward to this book for a very long time now. Everyone knows I am a huge fan of The Mortal Instruments series and I was both excited for and dreading the conclusion. I just didn’t want it to end, but I also wanted to know all the things. It was so bad, that I started reading, got about halfway though and then decided that I wasn’t ready to say goodbye and ignored the book for about a week. I needed to be ready and when I picked it up again, I was ready.

Clary and Jace have come so far from when we first met them in City of Bones. Clary has always been strong and determined, but now she has skills and is a badass fighter too. She has really come into her Shadowhunter abilities. I love that she always does what needs to be done and never backs down. I just think she is a great heroine. Then you have Jace and I adore Jace. He is one of my very first book boyfriends, so he will always have a special place in my heart. Jace is the definition of character growth. I love the Jace we have in this book. He is so strong and tough and is finally beginning to believe in himself. I love him and Clary together and how they are a team. They fight together and with each other. They are this awesome badass dynamic duo that should not be messed with.

Other than Jace and Clary though, you have some truly awesome secondary characters. I have to start with Magnus because I simply love him. I always have and I always will. He is fabulous. Then there is Simon who has dug his way into my heart forever with all his nerdy glory. Cannot forget Isabelle because she is incredible and I wish we could be BFFs. And Alec. Alec and I got off to a rocky start, but I have really come to love him. I also love that we got to see a lot more of Jace and Alec’s parabati relationship in this book.

This book definitely delivered all the feels. I think my heart was in my throat the entire time and I trudged my way along to the conclusion. There was so much going on and so many story lines to be wrapped up. There were moments that absolutely broke my heart and I admit to sobbing at one point. But there were also moments that made me incredibly happy. It was a great balance and this book just made my heart feel like it was about to burst.

Speaking of feels. I think the stuff that hit me the most was all of The Infernal Devices references. Every time one of my beloved characters was mentioned I squealed and I’m not even exaggerating. It made me feel a bit guilty, because this isn’t their story, but what can I say; Will and Jem and Tessa own me. I loved getting references to them and I will take any extra I can get when it comes to them.

I know this review probably doesn’t give you much, but I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone. I can say I was very very happy with it, with the exception of a thing or two here and there. It’s a good conclusion and Cassie closes out the series well. I am also ready for The Dark Artifices now. I have met Emma and I can tell I’m going to like her. I may not have appreciated her when she took me away from my Clary and Jace, but I am ready for her to have her own story.

City of Heavenly Fire delivers the conclusion everyone has been waiting for. It is heartbreaking, but happy and the characters are given the story they deserve. A strong conclusion to one of my all-time favorite series.

  2. I don't know why I haven't gotten excited about this one. I read the first three books when they came out, and loved them. I kind of still think the series should have ended there. BUT. I do love this world, and am happy you loved CoHF!

I'm glad she wrapped up the series nicely. I wasn't a fan how TID ended, so I hope it's better than that!

  7. I'm so happy the conclusion was just what the characters, and readers, deserved! I've only read the first book, but I automatically fell for Jace and Clary. And when I do continue the series I can't wait to see them both grow and develop. I do need to get back to this series :D And I'm glad you are happy with the ending of this series, which is also so bittersweet.

I'm terrified! I look at sitting on my desk in all it's 725 page glory and I'm absolutely terrified. I'm not ready to read it. I'm not sure I can take the feels. I think I'll stare at it a while longer. I'm glad you made it through and came out happy. Gives me hope.

  10. I cannot wait to catch up with this series. Its going to be oh so sweet, and maybe because I thought that this series should have ended with City of Glass, is why I haven't read the next books. But your review makes me very very happy. I'm so glad you enjoyed this, and that this delivers on the feels. You can't have a conclusion without the feels! YAY!! :D Fabulous review, Teresa! Glad you enjoyed this!
