"A hot and consuming New Adult romance about a wayward musician and the one girl who keeps him grounded…

At college, Rachel has a reputation for being a sarcastic flirt with a thing for star athletes. No one at school knows that she’d had her heart ripped to shreds by her high school sweetheart, who’d driven them both off the side of the road on a borrowed motorcycle, and then abandoned her. No one knows the real Rachel Mattson—except one person…

Ever since he helped nurse his sister’s feisty best friend back to health, pierced bass player Kai Nakos has been head over heels in love. But the supposed bad boy can’t risk letting Rachel know the truth—especially now that the two of them are back in their hometown for the summer, together for the first time since the months following that fateful night. Never mind that Rachel’s ex is back, groveling for her forgiveness.

Shaken by her ex’s return, Rachel finds herself turning to the one guy she knows she can trust. Kai is willing to hide his feelings for her, just to have Rachel touch him again. After all, this is only a temporary fling. Until it becomes something more. But maybe it had been more all along."

My Thoughts:

This series really knows how to latch onto your heart and not let go. I absolutely loved Rachel and Kai’s story. Christina Lee once again took the elements one would normally find in New Adult, but twisted them and made them her own. The story will hook you from the beginning and not let you go. I felt like my heart was in my throat the entire time reading this one.

If you think you know Rachel from the first two books, you don’t. There is so much hiding behind that care free party girl. Rachel is lively and fun and does what she wants and who she wants. She comes across as confident. However, Rachel does what she does because she is putting up a front. She is hiding from herself and who she was in high school. She never wants to be that weak girl again who was pitied, so she took control. However, this front is taking a toll on her and she is tired of pretending to be someone she is not and going home for a summer starts to break down that wall she has carefully built up. I loved Rachel. I loved how sassy and strong she was, but that she was also insecure and fragile in some ways.

Kai absolutely broke my heart. On the outside Kai is your typical rocker bad boy with piercings and tattoos, but like with Rachel there is much more there. Kai is lost and just doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life. He has no direction and feels like a complete screw up. He feels like he isn’t good at anything other than music, but even with that he just doesn’t know how to make a living with it. The only other thing Kai knows is that he is completely in love with Rachel and will do anything for her.

Rachel and Kai’s chemistry was off the charts. I absolutely loved them together and their interactions. I loved that they were best friends first and truly understood one another. Rachel could open up to Kai in a way she couldn’t with anyone else. They didn’t judge each other; they were just there for one another. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to watch Kai completely and irrevocably love Rachel and see him think that she will never want more from him, that she is using him to forget. He is willing to help her forget because he loves her and he prepares himself to have to let her go, even if it breaks him. Rachel is surprised by Kai and finally starts to come to terms with something that started in high school. She can’t shake him; but like Kai, Rachel thinks he is just looking for fun.

There was one character in Whisper To Me that I struggled with and that was Dakota. Dakota is Rachel’s best friend from home. Honestly, I had a very hard time liking her. She was very tough on her brother and I really felt like she couldn’t see him for who he was. She was also hard on Rachel and I felt like she was pushy. I know she had Rachel/Kai’s best interest at heart, but I just struggled with her. I of course loved seeing Avery, Bennett, Ella, and Quinn again. There was one thing that made me flail. Also, I just love Avery. That girl always cracks me up; probably because I love how crude she is.

Whisper To Me was another great read in the Between Breaths series. Rachel and Kai will steal your heart and make you swoon. Not one to be missed.
