"A flash of white light . . . and then . . . nothing.
When sixteen-year-old Kyra Agnew wakes up behind a Dumpster at the Gas ’n’ Sip, she has no memory of how she got there. With a terrible headache and a major case of déjà vu, she heads home only to discover that five years have passed . . . yet she hasn’t aged a day.

Everything else about Kyra’s old life is different. Her parents are divorced, her boyfriend, Austin, is in college and dating her best friend, and her dad has changed from an uptight neat-freak to a drunken conspiracy theorist who blames her five-year disappearance on little green men.

Confused and lost, Kyra isn’t sure how to move forward unless she uncovers the truth. With Austin gone, she turns to Tyler, Austin’s annoying kid brother, who is now seventeen and who she has a sudden undeniable attraction to. As Tyler and Kyra retrace her steps from the fateful night of her disappearance, they discover strange phenomena that no one can explain, and they begin to wonder if Kyra’s father is not as crazy as he seems. There are others like her who have been taken . . . and returned. Kyra races to find an explanation and reclaim the life she once had, but what if the life she wants back is not her own?"

My Thoughts:

I liked this one a lot more than I thought I would. It was a super quick read and I breezed through it. I had a ton of fun reading this one and the ending has me dying for a sequel. This is my first book by this author but it for sure will not be my last.

Kyra is a great heroine because she is believable. She wakes up lost and alone to find out she has lost five years of her life. Everything is different for her and it is a lot for her to take in. I like that she felt real and believable and I could feel her confusion. She is a strong heroine, but in a quiet way. She is strong in the sense that she survives and deals with the changes and comes to terms with everything. It’s a nice progression as opposed to her just coming back and suddenly being amazing.

Tyler was also great and very swoony. He is very sweet and charming. I feel like we still have a lot to learn about Tyler and I can’t wait to learn it all. But so far I like what I see. He is exactly what Kyra needed. She needed someone to just be her friend and show her that she can make something out of this second chance.

I’ve read a good amount of alien stories, but I can’t recall one that deals with abduction so that was a nice twist for me. It was weird to see the after effect of an abduction. So it’s about aliens, but it’s not really about aliens.

I liked the romance in the book; it was super sweet although a tad fast. But it’s understandable given the circumstances. Although in the beginning, I was a little weird about the age thing until I realized Kyra is still sixteen in all the important ways. My only complaint is that I wish I had some more answers. I am left with a lot of whys and something major was left open. I love that I’m left wanting more, but I want to know!

All in all, The Taking is a good read. It’s quick and fun and very hard to put down.

  8. I don't like aliens and YA but you raised some interesting points, a not so alien story in particular has me piqued.

  10. I agree that romance was a tad fast, but I still totally fell for Tyler even though at first it was kinda awkward because she was with his brother, but I quickly saw he stood on his own because of how devoted he was and their undeniable chemistrhy

  11. I haven't read it yet, but this is solely based on my prejudices, but I can't imagine liking this book solely because I am soooo weirded out by that fact that last time Kyra saw Tyler she was dating his brother and he was what? 12? And now she starts falling for him? Sure, she staid 16, but in reality she is 21. Now, I am not one to judge age differences. In fact, I always prefer couples with an age difference of a minimum of 3 years - it makes things more interesting. But SHE KNEW HIM when he was 12. How do you move past that?
