Book Review: The Mark of Athena (The Heroes of Olympus #3) by: Rick Riordan

Release Date: October 2, 2013
from Disney Hyperion
Goodreads | Amazon

"Annabeth is terrified. Just when she's about to be reunited with Percy—after six months of being apart, thanks to Hera—it looks like Camp Jupiter is preparing for war. As Annabeth and her friends Jason, Piper, and Leo fly in on the Argo II, she can’t blame the Roman demigods for thinking the ship is a Greek weapon. With its steaming bronze dragon masthead, Leo's fantastical creation doesn't appear friendly. Annabeth hopes that the sight of their praetor Jason on deck will reassure the Romans that the visitors from Camp Half-Blood are coming in peace.

And that's only one of her worries. In her pocket Annabeth carries a gift from her mother that came with an unnerving demand: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods on a quest to find—and close—the Doors of Death. What more does Athena want from her?

Annabeth's biggest fear, though, is that Percy might have changed. What if he's now attached to Roman ways? Does he still need his old friends? As the daughter of the goddess of war and wisdom, Annabeth knows she was born to be a leader, but never again does she want to be without Seaweed Brain by her side.

Narrated by four different demigods, The Mark of Athena is an unforgettable journey across land and sea to Rome, where important discoveries, surprising sacrifices, and unspeakable horrors await. Climb aboard the Argo II, if you dare...."

My Thoughts:

I love Percy Jackson. I remember devouring the books when I first discovered them. There was no stopping me. I just ate the books up. Then I found out about this second series; The Heroes of Olympus and I could barely contain my excitement. I sped through The Lost Hero. Then I waited patiently for The Son of Neptune and devoured that one as soon as I could. So where am I going with this? Well, how I didn’t read The Mark of Athena as soon as it was published is beyond me. I was seriously missing out, because this book was awesome.

Everything is coming together now. The Romans and the Greeks are aware of each other and now the seven from the prophecy are united. I liked that we finally got all the main players in one place and that the story is going in one direction now. I liked seeing demigods from two camps come together and work together. They really make a great team and certain others need to learn from their example.

I love that this book gives us multiple perspectives, but at the same time I kinda hate it. I love reading from different points of view and getting multiple sides to the story, but I also hate that it’s not all from Percy’s perspective, because he is my favorite. This may be because I’m so used to his point of view. I also really liked Annabeth’s perspective and it was nice to finally see what goes on inside her head, because she is seriously awesome. I also really really enjoyed Leo’s perspective. I found him to be hysterical and he is quickly becoming my favorite non-original series character.

Now I have to take a second to gush over Percy. I love him so much and I feel like I really know him, which is weird, but true. I feel as if I’ve watched him grow up and when I see him in these crazy situations and watch him handle them with experience, I just think back and remember a scared little twelve year old out on a crazy quest to save his mom. He has come so far over the course of the series. He is now the great hero Percy Jackson, whereas when we first met him, he was just a little boy with a funny name.

This book delivered the action and adventure, with a touch of romance. I love Percy and Annabeth together and I love how they fight together. The book takes twists and turns and keeps you glued to the pages. It was so hard for me to put this one down! Despite it being nearly 600 pages, the book seems to fly by. And trust me, when you get to that ending you’ll be begging for more pages to the book.

The Mark of Athena is a great read and one you do not want to miss. Fans of the series will not be disappointed and if you aren’t a fan, I suggest you get on that.

  1. Ack! I only read the 1st book, but loved it, and I seriously need to make time to read the rest. I love that this spin off series is just as awesome, if not better, than the original. Great review!

  5. I love this series too!! Have you read Kane Chronicles? That one's awesome as well but not as big as Percy's universe.

  6. I'm with you on how the multiple perspectives are cool, but I kept wanting Percy/Annabeth or Jason/Piper. Everyone else was kinda meh. You are going to love House of Hades, because Riordan steps up the romance a bit for them and I loved it!!!!

  9. Oh, I love this review! And you can take more than a second to gush about Percy... in fact, if we bring Kk into the discussion, we may be here gushing for hours! LOL! I love what you say about the adorable young hero, and I'm really excited to start this second series! I won't even let the fact that it's 600 PAGES scare me. *gulp* Awesome review, dearest! *squishes you*
