Book Review: Honesty (Mark of Nexus #2.5) by: Carrie Butler

Release Date: March 16, 2014
Goodreads | Amazon
Source: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
"Note: This novella is best enjoyed after STRENGTH (Mark of Nexus #1) and COURAGE (Mark of Nexus #2). It is told from Cole's (semi-warped) POV.

Cole Blake is more than just a roguish ladies’ man. He’s also a dedicated worker—so dedicated, in fact, that he’s willing to blackmail his boss with a falsified sex tape in order to keep his job. And his proactive efforts don’t end there. After hours, he uses his Dynari abilities to moonlight as a vigilante, keeping his neighborhood safe from drunks, dealers, and would-be thieves.

Until a mistake stops him dead in his super-accelerated tracks.

Now burdened with the closest thing he’s ever had to a conscience, Cole struggles to justify his once-reckless actions. It’d be all too easy to give in to his darker impulses, especially with ERA making dangerous advances toward their goal of revolution, but embracing that hatred could jeopardize the few relationships he actually cares about—including his pursuit of the saintly Rachel Ranford. No, in order to keep everyone safe, he’ll have to come clean about his warring compulsions and ask for help... before his dark side takes over. "

My Thoughts:

This book was so much fun! From beginning to end I was laughing nonstop! Cole’s point of view is just hysterical and even in the most serious of circumstances he is still funny. He just has such a wildly inappropriate humor about him that is pretty much impossible to resist. I loved Cole to begin with, but now I love him even more.

Cole is one of my favorite characters ever and there really is so much more to him than meets the eye. His actions may not always be the right course, but his motivations always come from a good place. He really tries to do the right thing; unfortunately for him things don’t always go as planned. While Cole always seems ready with a joke, underneath that he does take things seriously and there is a lot on his plate that he is constantly dealing with.

The first half of Honesty’s timeline overlaps with Courage and it was interesting seeing some of those events from Cole’s point of view. He was doing a lot of things Rena and Wallace were unaware of. Things that were very important and very helpful. He really is an integral part of bringing ERA down and Rena and Wallace need him more than they probably realize.

In Honesty, Cole also meets a love interest and this love interest shakes things up for him. She really gives Cole a run for his money and she is exactly what he needs. Rachel is awesome and the perfect balance for Cole. She makes him want to think before he acts and measure the consequences of his actions. But Rachel needs him too, which is what makes them work so well. There is a lot more I want to say about them, but spoilers, so yeah. But I just love them together.

Honesty is the best book in the Mark of Nexus series yet! Cole’s point of view is sharp, witty, and downright hysterical. If he wasn’t already my favorite character, he definitely would be now. There is so much more to Cole than anyone would ever guess. Cole steals the show and will have readers going: “Wallace who?”

  7. I love male POV stories too! It's just very different from when a female is telling the story.
