"A ragtag group of teenage mercenaries who crew the spaceship Avalon stumble upon a conspiracy that could threaten the entire galaxy in this fascinating and fast-paced sci-fi adventure from author Mindee Arnett.

Of the various star systems that make up the Confederation, most lie thousands of light-years from First Earth-and out here, no one is free. The agencies that govern the Confederation are as corrupt as the crime bosses who patrol it, and power is held by anyone with enough greed and ruthlessness to claim it. That power is derived from one thing: metatech, the devices that allow people to travel great distances faster than the speed of light.

Jeth Seagrave and his crew of teenage mercenaries have survived in this world by stealing unsecured metatech, and they're damn good at it. Jeth doesn't care about the politics or the law; all he cares about is earning enough money to buy back his parents' ship, Avalon, from his crime-boss employer and getting himself and his sister, Lizzie, the heck out of Dodge. But when Jeth finds himself in possession of information that both the crime bosses and the government are willing to kill for, he is going to have to ask himself how far he'll go to get the freedom he's wanted for so long.

Avalon is the perfect fit for teens new to sci-fi as well as seasoned sci-fi readers looking for more books in the YA space-and a great match for fans of Joss Whedon's cult hit show Firefly."

My Thoughts:

Sci-fi fans this is a book for you! This story will draw you in and the twists and turns will keep you on edge and there really are a lot of twists and turns. You can’t trust anyone because the moment you do, you end up regretting it. I really enjoyed this one and I was definitely invested in the characters and the story.

Jeth is our main character and I absolutely loved him. First, I simply loved that the story followed a guy. I love my heroines, but it’s nice to switch things up and get a guy’s perspective every now and then. Jeth is such an interesting character. He has been forced to grow up way too fast and to do things a 17 year old shouldn’t have to. After tragic circumstances, he has been forced to live his life as a thief. All he wants is to keep his family safe and earn enough money to get his ship back and be free. Of course nothing is ever simple and when a mission turns out to be so much more than it seems, everything Jeth has planned gets changed. I liked Jeth because he was strong and determined. He cared so much about his family and friends and was willing to do anything for them. He was willing to make tough decisions and put himself on the line to ensure their safety. I couldn’t help but feel for him.

What I really liked about this one was the wide range of characters. There were so many great and dynamic characters and there were many times when the secondary characters stole the show. Lizzie was easily my favorite. There was just something about her that I really took a liking to. All the characters combined to make a great group.

Avalon takes numerous twists and turns along the way. The story is action packed and it’s hard to see what’s coming next. There were a few things I was able to see coming but for the most part I was surprised along the way. As I was reading I had so many questions and that kept me glued to the pages. And the best part was that none of the sci-explanations were too convoluted. They all made sense.

There was however one thing that really really bothered me about this book and I’m going to try and explain this without spoilers. At one point a character does something that completely baffled me. This character basically betrays everyone and I just didn’t get it and I didn’t get the reasoning for it later. Yes, I saw it and yes I could kinda see it but I never got on board with the actions being justified and I could never really forgive the character for it. So there was a bit of disconnect for me on this point.

All in all, Avalon is a good read and one that keeps you turning pages until you get your answers. It has a great cast of characters and an awesome hero. It was a bit different from what I had been reading lately and exactly what I needed.

  2. I just couldn't get into this one. I stopped at 67%--I guess that tells me I'm not a Sci Fi fan. Seems like I'm one of the only ones that didn't enjoy it!

  3. The reason why I can't read sci-fi is because of the explanations, it can get too technical and as I'm not a science person, it flies over my head. This however sounds good, "dumbed down" for simple people like me coz of the not convoluted explanations.

  4. I'm glad you liked this overall, Teresa. Great characters, great action, and plainly worded sci-fi...what's not to like? I think I understand what you were saying when you described your issue with the book - it'd probably bother me as well. I don't like it when things don't make sense in a story. But it sounds like it didn't take away too much from your enjoyment. Great review, dear!

  7. Ooh, so glad to hear you liked this! I've seen some kind of mixed reviews, which always worry me, but I think the majority are positive. I'm especially excited to see that the science makes sense! That can be the total downfall of a sci-fi book. :)

    Great review!

  9. Great review! I'm not normally a sci-fi reader but I'm always open to trying new genres and this one sounds really great. I like the idea that it follows a YA male. That is always a nice change of pace. I'm very intrigued about the betrayal and how that is handled since it bothered you.

  11. I'm like you, I also love a book that is from a guy's POV every now and then :D And I think I must get my paws on this one! And I really want to meet the main character. I love sci-fi books, but it's so hard to fine one that I can be completely lost in. I think this one will be of the few that take me away! The action, the twists, the characters, this sounds like a must read :D

    Great review!
