"One choice will define you.

What if your whole world was a lie?
What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything?
What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected?

The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent."

My Thoughts:

I know that tons of people have been discussing this book lately and not really caring if they let spoilers out or not, but this will be a spoiler free review of Allegiant, because I truly believe this story shouldn’t be ruined and should be experienced first-hand. However, a lot of the events in Divergent and Insurgent shape what happens in Allegiant so there will be minor spoilers for the first two books in the series, but nothing that would completely ruin your enjoyment of reading those two.

I’m just going to get right to what everyone is talking about… the ending. I won’t say much, because again spoilers, but it’s a shocker. It’s not your typical ending and yes it did make me ugly cry, but it’s also not a bad ending, which is contrary to what most people are saying. It’s different and shocking and brave. Honestly, I don’t understand all the backlash. People constantly complain about how YA books all follow the same path and nothing is new, but then when something comes along that is new, they rise up against it.

Veronica Roth’s writing is still wonderful and she easily pulls the reader into this world. Any writer that can take your heart and practically fuse it to the characters and their well-being is truly something special and that is exactly what she did. The story was engaging and kept me on edge and I loved every single second of it, even the seconds that hurt.

My absolute favorite part of the story was getting inside Four’s head. I really enjoyed reading from his perspective. I felt like it really added another layer to the story. We also see just how damaged he is. Four is not as strong as we were once led to believe and Marcus did more damage to him than we thought. Getting inside his head really enabled you to understand why he does the things he does and why he makes the decisions he makes. Plus, I just love him, so it was nice reading more about him.

Tris will always be one of my favorite heroines. She is so strong and willing to do whatever is necessary. I love her strength and compassion. I love that she is real and breaks down. I love her ability to forgive anyone and how she loves completely. I also love that she and Four bring out the best in each other and make one another better.

A lot of people have a lot of hate towards this book, but I don’t get it. Yes everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I really thought it was a good book. It may not have been exactly what I wanted but it was still good and was still enjoyable. The writing is fantastic and the world created is so amazing. This book changes everything you thought you knew about the series. It wraps everything up and that for me is the most important thing in a conclusion… no loose ends.

All in all, Allegiant is a good read. This series will always be one of my very favorites. Even though this book was nothing I expected, it was still a wonderful read despite it making me ugly cry. Maybe I’m the dissenting opinion here, but I thought this was an enjoyable book and a strong and memorable end to the series.

  3. I never finished Allegiant, and don't really plan to, so I found spoilers for this. It is shocking, and I can sort of see why the author did it. But I am glad that you liked it, Teresa. Great review!

  4. Wow, thanks for going against the grain and providing a spoiler free review. I have typed up my review myself with a big spoiler warning at the top. I actually thought Four's perspective ruined it for me, but stay tuned and you'll find out why.

  5. I'm really glad that you liked this one, Teresa! I don't understand the backlash either - you're totally right. People always say that YA never has anything new, then when something comes along like this... it's world war 3! I'm glad that you liked getting into Four's mind (I did too!) and that you liked the ending okay. Awesome review!

    1. Exactly! This was about as different as you could get and people freaked out... probably why so many authors follow the same patters =[

  8. Great review Teresa! I agree- I think the ending worked- I hate that it was the way it was, but I still get it. I thought adding Four's perspective was a cool one- but I do love dual POV's! I'm so glad you enjoyed this and felt satisfied as a whole.
