Book Review: Castle Hill: A Joss and Braden Novella (On Dublin Street #2.5) by: Samantha Young

Release Date: December 3, 2013 from NAL
Add To Goodreads
Source: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
"Braden Carmichael never imagined he’d fall as hard and as fast as he did for Jocelyn Butler. He also could not have anticipated how difficult it would be to convince her to give in to love. But now that he has her, he’s never letting go. He’s got it all planned—the passionate proposal, the dream wedding, the sexy Hawaiian honeymoon—even the perfect family they’ll start.

After trying to flee from her painful past, Joss is finally allowing herself to embrace the future. But when things start moving faster than she anticipated, she finds herself panicking over something Braden can’t understand. After everything they’ve been through, Joss is sure that their love can survive even her worst fears. But, this time, she may push Braden too far—and risk losing everything all over again…"

My Thoughts:

On Dublin Street is one of my favorite books ever. There are not many books I would choose over it. I love Joss and Braden and I can experience their story over and over again. So to say I was excited for Castle Hill would be an understatement. I was so excited that the moment it hit my kindle, I began reading. I devoured it in one sitting and absolutely adored it. I loved getting more of Joss and Braden, even if it was only a little bit more.

The tough thing with novellas is that you have to make the story emotional over a relatively short span. Samantha Young did this wonderfully. My heart was torn to pieces and of course I loved every second of it. It was such a good story and one that fans of this series really should not miss. There were so many supremely sweet moments that made me smile like a goofball. But this is Joss and Braden, so there were also tons of steamy scenes and yes caveman Braden does come to visit. However, again this is Joss and Braden so there is some heartache to be found. Joss has come a very long way, but that doesn’t mean everything is perfect. Joss and Braden hit a rough patch in this one and it tore my heart apart.

I don't really know how to express how much I loved this novella. It was just such a great read and I wish it didn't have to end.

Castle Hill was a great novella and I really love that I was able to get some more Joss and Braden. It was sweet and steamy and heartbreaking. It is exactly how a novella should be done. The story moved at a good pace and didn’t feel rushed at all. This is definitely one I will revisit again and again.

Book Review: Pride (Shifters #3) by: Rachel Vincent

Release Date: February 1, 2009
from Mira Books
Add To Goodreads

"I'm on trial for my life. Falsely accused of infecting my human ex-boyfriend--and killing him to cover up the crime. Infecting a human is one of three capital offenses recognized by the Pride--along with murder and disclosure of our existence to a human.I'm two for three. A goner.
Now we've discovered a rogue stray terrorizing the mountainside, hunting a wild teenage tabbycat. It's up to us to find and stop him before a human discovers us. With my lover Marc's help, I think I can protect the vulnerable girl from both the ambitious rogue and the scheming of the territorial council.

If I survive my own trial..."

My Thoughts:

It’s been over a year now since I read the last Shifters book, Rogue. I don’t know why it took me so long to pick up Pride, but I’m kind of kicking myself for not squeezing it in sooner. I seriously forgot how much I enjoy this series and the characters. It also reminded me that I need to read more adult paranormal, because I really love it.

Faythe is a character I have come to love more over time. I initially struggled with her in Stray. I liked that she was strong and independent, but I don’t like that she behaved this way at the detriment to her family. I feel like Faythe has grown so much. She is still that strong, sassy, independent girl, but she is also there for her family. She has also begun to learn to accept the consequences that come along with her actions, even if those consequences are a bit out of control. Speaking on that, I do get frustrated with the way people always seem to be looking to find her flaws and mistakes.

Then we have Marc, and I love Marc. He can be frustrating at times but I still loves him. He and Faythe are great together and so many of their problems could be solved if both of them would just speak to each other. I wish these two would have put their pride aside and used their words. It is so clear that they love each other, and finally when things start to look up, other things make their life crazy.

I have to take a second to mention Jace, because I love this boy. He is such a sweetheart and so funny. I want him to be happy in the worst way! I also need to mention Malone. How in the world does nobody see past his nonsense? How can anyone think he is looking out for anyone other than himself. He is selfish and greedy and an ass. I hate him!

What I love about this series is that each story is distinct. There are plot lines that carry over from one book to the next, however each book has its own clear problem and story to it. You don’t have a scenario where the book feels like it ends smack in the middle of a book. There are certain points to be concluded, but the main storyline is wrapped up. I also love that the romance is not the focal point, Faythe and all her crazy is front and center. This is Faythe’s story and her story is so much more than which boy she should choose (on that point, I don’t see the love triangle… this is not a love triangle… unless that happens later?) It is about finding her way and making her own path while still staying true to her family. The pretty boys are just a plus.

All in all, Pride was a good addition to the series. I tend to have a hard time with werewolf/shifter books, but I really love this series. I can’t wait to continue this story with Faythe.

""What I feel for you..." Cam sucked in a breath and I found myself reaching a hand up to his face, my heart pounding as I watched this man- this strong, irreverent man- overcome with emotion... emotion for me. "It's all consuming," he breathed, leaning his forehead against mine again. "It's almost debilitating. It's too much. It's... I can't even describe it, but being with you is.... There's this intensity inside me all the time, this... constant pull, desperation... it's like you're branded on me or something. And it bloody well burns"

I friggin loved this book! Cam was so lovable!

Also Happy Thanksgiving! Today I am thankful for yummy book boys, like Cam.

"I threw the door open and burst inside. The room went silent following my dramatic entrance. I didn't notice anyone else; I couldn't have even told you who was there and where they were standing. All I saw was him. And all he saw was me. I barely had time to drop my bags before he made it across the room. His arms wound around me and he pulled me hard against him. I was home."

Totally broke the two sentence rule thing, but I couldn't help myself. I loved this part of the book.

Blog Tour: Welcome To Sugartown by: Carmen Jenner (Review, Teaser, and Giveaway)

Title: Welcome to Sugartown
Author: Carmen Jenner
Genre: Contemporary New Adult
Release Date: November 3, 2013

Ana Belle never wanted anything more than to hang up her apron, jump on her Vespa and ride off into the sunset, leaving Sugartown in the dust.

Elijah Cade never wanted anything more than a hot meal, a side of hot arse and a soft place to lay his head at night where he could forget about his past.

But you know what they say about wanting: you always want what you can’t have.

Nineteen year-old virgin Ana is about to discover that’s not quite true because a six foot three, hotter than hell, tattooed, Aussie sex god just rode into town. He’s had a taste of her pie and he wants more– no really, Ana bakes pies for a living, get your mind out of the gutter.

She’d be willing to hand over everything tied up in a big red bow, there’s just one problem; Elijah has secrets dirtier than last week’s underwear. Secrets that won’t just break Ana’s heart, but put her life at risk, too. When those secrets come to light, their relationship is pushed to breaking point.

Add to that a psychotic nympho best friend, an overbearing father, a cuter than humanly possible kid brother, a wanton womanizing cousin, the ex from hell and more pies than you could poke a ... err ... stick ... at.

And you thought small towns were boring.

_____________________________________________________________

My Thoughts:

Do not let the sweet and sugary title fool you. This is not a fluffy read; it is so so so much more than that. It was funny and sexy and gritty and emotional. The characters get under your skin, make you crazy, break your heart, but you still root for them all the same.

I’m just gonna get right to it… Elijah is rough, very very rough. He also has a good heart and tries to make good out of bad situations. I’m not going to lie; Elijah was a tough one for me. He broke my heart, shattered it really. I had come to love him oh so much and then he broke me. Honestly, I don’t know if I can forgive him some of the things he did, but I really really want to, so that counts for something. It’s a good thing he makes you love him early on, makes it easier to understand why he makes some of the decisions he does. He is delicious and swoonworthy, but he is not perfect and that makes him real.

Ana is such a sweetheart and she puts up with a lot more than she deserves. Living in her small town hasn’t been easy due to some unfortunate circumstances in high school. Things don’t really get easier for her, even with Elijah in the picture. Ana deals with a lot and her situation made my heart break. I wanted to give this girl the biggest hug and glue all her broken pieces together. Ana is stubborn and afraid of her feelings for Elijah, but I can’t say I blame her.

The secondary characters in Welcome To Sugartown are also fantastic. Holly cracked me up and is the best kind of friend. Sammy is the cutest thing ever and I think he needs his own book… joking…. kind of. Then we have Jackson. We don’t see much of him, but I kind of love him and his sexiness already.

The chemistry between Ana and Elijah is off the charts. These two have so much tension and it builds and builds. There are so many ridiculously steamy scenes. But while the chemistry is hot, so are their tempers. These two are constantly fighting and it always seems as if something is in the way. It really makes you wonder if the chemistry between them will be enough.

Along with the romance, we get so much more to the story. It’s not just about two people falling for each other. Oh no… it’s about two people figuring out what they want in life and doing something about it. It’s about Ana growing up and deciding who she wants to be. It’s about overcoming obstacles nobody should ever have to overcome and becoming a better version of yourself on the other side. It’s everything I want when I pick up a book.

Welcome To Sugartown is a great read and a wonderful debut novel for Carmen Jenner. I laughed my butt off, cried like a baby, grabbed some ice water, and got lost in the pages. It’s one I recommend to those who like rough and gritty romances with fantastic side characters and tons of sexy.

About Carmen

Carmen Jenner is a thirty-something author, doctor, pilot and CIA agent.

She's also a compulsive, flagrant prevaricator who gets to make things up for a living.

While Sugartown may not technically exist, Carmen grew up in a small Australian town just like it, and just like her characters, she always longed for something more. They didn't have an Elijah Cade, though. If they did, you can be sure she would have never left.

Be The First To Fall

"One dark moment was all it took to turn twenty-four-year-old Dominic Kinkaide's world black. On the night of his high school graduation, a single incident changed him forever, and he became a hardened man-famous in the eyes of the world, but tortured inside. Now all he cares about is losing himself in the roles that he plays.

At twenty-three years old, Jacey Vincent doesn't realize how much her father's indifference has affected her. She is proof that sometimes it isn't one specific moment that wrecks a person, but an absence of moments. She tries to find acceptance in the arms of men to fill the void-a plan that has worked just fine for her, until she meets Dominic. When jaded Dominic and strong-willed Jacey are thrown together, the combination of his secrets and her issues turns their attraction into the perfect storm. It could change their lives for good-if it doesn't tear them both apart…"

Excerpt:
He laughs, a velvety sound. “Babe, I could show you a bunch of things you’ve never done. And I guarantee, you’d like every one of them.”

For some reason, I have no doubt of that. It’s an exciting thought.

He bends his head and nips at my neck, then soothes the bite with a soft suck. His lips, so soft and smooth, ease the pain of the bite away. His nearness is intoxicating and everything about him screams that he is capable of so many things… things that would please me… things that would embarrass me in the light of day.

But still, I don’t move. I stay right with him, my gaze frozen on his.

Keeping his eyes on mine, he slowly dips his head and plunges his tongue into my mouth, completely plundering it, consuming me yet again. It’s like he can’t kiss me without devastating all of my senses at once, annihilating my thoughts and causing my blood to throb as it all races toward one destination… the V between my legs.

Right where I ache for him.

He’s like a drug….and one taste just isn’t enough.

I open up my mouth and breathe around his lips, sucking in air, grasping at his back and pulling him closer. He reaches back and grabs my hands, holding them together at my wrists and pinning them over my head against the plexi-glass gondola cage. I’m trapped here with him, yet there’s no place I’d rather be.

The energy around us now is primal and raw…and it’s exhilarating too, because we’re out in public. Every time the gondola swoops along the ground before it begins its ascent upward again, anyone could look in and see what we’re doing. They could see Dominic pinning me against the wall, and his other hand buried in my crotch, if only they looked closely.

Honestly, I think he might like that idea.

“What are you doing?” I finally manage to whisper, pulling away just ever so slightly.

His eyes are a little unfocused, his pupils dilated. “What would you like for me to do, Jacey?”

He knows. Oh, God, he knows. He knows exactly what I’d like for him to do.

The Awakening: Britton by Abby Niles
The Awakening #3

"I would lick that man up one side and down the other."

Half-shifter and lead SPAC agent, Val Calhoun, has listened to women gush over the Don Juan of the precinct for the last four years. Yeah, Detective Britton Townsend is hot and has stunning blue eyes, but that foul mouth he saves only for her? What a waste of good looks. And no way does Val want that mouth anywhere near hers.

When the shifter community is threatened, Val is assigned to the case…and fails. So the High Council turns to the rogue shifter they'd sentenced to twenty years as a human--that same obnoxiously sexy Detective Townsend. And sends the two arch-enemies deep into the North Carolina Mountains-—together, and alone.

Being stuck in a tiny honeymoon cabin with Miss Castration and only one bed is definitely not Britton's idea of a good time. But the High Council doesn’t take no for an answer. After his shifter abilities are restored, Brit is once again susceptible to the dreaded, irreversible bonding instinct, the Drall. Thankfully, all he’s ever felt for Val is intense loathing, no reason to worry. Right? All he has to do is solve this case pronto, and he can go back to his footloose Casanova ways. That is, if they don’t kill each other first. Or worse...fall in love.

Missed the first book in the Awakening series? While these books stand alone, it can be fun to go back and see how the other couple got together. And in celebration of book #3's release, book one, The Awakening: Aidan is on sale for just $0.99 as well, so grab it while you can!

The Awakening: Aidan by Abby Niles
The Awakening #1

Is the gift of eternal love a blessing or a curse? After years of counseling grieving shifters, psychiatrist and half-shifter, Dr. Jaylin Avgar has become jaded on shifter mating. She wants to marry a human and forget about the love for eternity crap. Then she meets Aidan O’Connell, an infuriatingly laid back shifter who represents everything she doesn’t want. Yet, the more he pursues her, the more she craves a future with him. Only one thing stands in her way: death. Can she overcome her fear of losing Aidan to the one guarantee in life? Millionaire consultant, Aidan O’Connell knows he’ll one day meet a woman who’ll awaken an unrelenting mating instinct. Unfortunately, that woman is Jaylin, who has no qualms about telling him that he and his so-called eternity can shove it. When she pushes him away, he takes a drastic step so she can no longer escape. The close proximity throws the instinct into overdrive. Can he control the need engrained in him until he’s certain she will reciprocate the bond, or will a moment of weakness doom him to hell on earth?

"He’s arrogant, domineering, and... To. Die. For.

Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.

Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something... unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.

Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life… or is it Hunter?"

Nicole Speaks:
I was so excited to hear about a book from the Arums point of view, but I was also extremely nervous about reading it. What if I liked the Arum more than the Luxen? What if it changed all of my feelings about Daemon and Hunter’s entire world? I was hesitant about starting, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to resist reading another JLA book, especially a spin-off from one of my favorite series!

When I started reading this book I was immediately in love. I loved Hunter and his jack-assness. It was interesting to see how different the Arum were from the Luxen (despite the obvious things I had learned in Obsidian), yet how similar they were at the same time. Hunter and Daemon both have a little itty-bitty attitude problems when they first meet their future love-interests, but they both end up putting their whole lives on the line for the girls that are most important to them.

One part that was amazing was when you got to see Daemon. Hunter trying to figure out how to keep Serena safe and not to kill her, so he visits Luc. At the same time, Daemon is visiting Luc because he is determined to get Katy back at all costs. Seeing these similar problems existing at the same time shows how the good Luxen and the good Arum aren’t as different as we thought.

Hunter was just a great character in my opinion. He starts out being filled with hatred for almost every one he has ever met, but the more time he spends with Serena, the more “human” he becomes. At first he’s all cranky and demanding - and trust me I’m not saying that changes – but he becomes a lot more as he gains feelings for Serena. Hunter having feelings for her really causes a lot of damage for the bad Luxen that come in his path. It was exciting to see how much one person could change another person.

While I did love Hunter, and Serena was great, my favorite part of this book was what it made me think about. I had always assumed Luxen were good, Arum were bad, but now I see that it’s not that simple. There are some very very bad and evil Luxen, and there are some good Arum too. I can’t wait to see what that’ll mean for the future Luxen books.

I am so glad I read this book because Hunter was just amazing, and it really made me question a world that I thought I knew so much about. Now I can’t wait to read the next Luxen book and see what all this means and what’ll happen next!
