"In the zombie-infested, post-apocalyptic America where Benny Imura lives, every teenager must find a job by the time they turn fifteen or get their rations cut in half. Benny doesn't want to apprentice as a zombie hunter with his boring older brother Tom, but he has no choice. He expects a tedious job whacking zoms for cash, but what he gets is a vocation that will teach him what it means to be human."

My Thoughts:

Once again I must thank the lovely Michele over at A Belle’s Tales for not only introducing me to this one but also for loaning me her copy *squish*. I absolutely loved this book and this is a book that zombie fans must read. It has all the zombie nom nom goodness you want but it also delivers much more than that. Under all the flesh eating monsters, this is a story about the people that live in this type of world.

Yes this is a zombie read, but it is not simply zombies running a muck eating people left and right. It is more a story of how people react when the world falls apart. That is what makes the story great! You can only watch zombies eat people for so long without it getting boring. There has to be more to the story than just gore, and Maberry does exactly that. He makes it about the people as well as the zombies and how the end of the world changes people and not always for the better. Maberry introduces us to a great cast of characters that you cannot help but fall in love with.

We have our main character Benny, who is simply hysterical. I loved how he rarely thought before he opened his mouth and I loved his internal debates. I loved that he was much smarter than he sometimes came across. Benny is not your normal hero, but a hero he is. Then we have Nix, who is one tough chick. She is incredibly brave and does not go down without a fight. Of all the wonderful characters though, my favorite is Tom. Tom is Benny’s older brother and just an incredible character. He is the kind of person who reacted to the end of the world in the way you would hope to react if this were to happen. There is a lot I want to say about Tom, but I feel like I can’t say much without spoiling the story. A character like Tom needs to be experienced first-hand. I think I have a crush on Tom and I am pretty sure that was not the author’s intent, but I just adore him.

Like I said, there is much more to the story than simply zombie lunch time. The plot is fast paced and action packed and keeps you on your toes. There is even a little bit of romance thrown in there. I really loved that the romance didn’t take center stage and that the story stayed focused on the more important plot lines that were initially presented. However, it was very cute and very sweet. The writing is also wonderful and the world building is fantastic. I easily got lost in the pages and dragged into this new and kinda scary world.

Rot and Ruin is a book that zombie fans must pick up! Like the cover says “It is full of heart… they just don’t beat anymore” and that statement could not be any more true. The story will warm your heart, and it may have made me shed a tear, but it will also keep your adrenaline pumping and heart racing. All in all, it is a must read.

  4. I've heard really good things about this, but never considered reading it since I'm not into zombies. But, since there's more to the story, I may give it a try. Thanks for the helpful review!
