"24-year old Pax Tate is an asshole.

He’s a tattooed, rock-hard bad-boy with a bad attitude to match.

But he’s got his reasons.

His mother died when Pax was seven, leaving a hole in his heart filled with guilt although he doesn’t understand why. What he does know is that he and his dad are left alone and with more issues than they can count.

As Pax grew up, he tried to be the kid his father always wanted; the perfect golden boy, but it didn’t work. His dad couldn’t overcome his grief long enough to notice and Pax couldn’t keep up the impossible perfect façade.
So he slipped far, far from it.

Now, he uses drugs and women to cope with the ugliness, the black void that he doesn’t want to deal with. If he pretends that the emptiness isn’t there, then it isn’t, right?

And it’s never more apparent than when he meets Mila.
Sweet, beautiful Mila Hill is the fresh air to his hardened frown, the beauty to his ugly heart. He doesn’t know how to not hurt her, but he quickly realizes that he’s got to figure it out because he needs her to breathe.

When memories of his mother’s death resurface from where he’s repressed them for so long, Mila is there to catch him when the guilt starts making sense. Mila is the one…the one who can save him from his broken troubled heart; from his issues, from the emptiness.

But only if he can stop being an asshole long enough to allow it.

He knows that. And he’s working on it.

But is that enough to make her stay?"

My Thoughts:

Here we go again. I bought this book the day it released into the world and I finally just got around to reading it. Why it took me so damn long to read, I will never understand. I absolutely loved this story. From beginning to end, I loved this story. Oh and for the record, this book probably has the best first page in the history of books ever. Talk about a crazy way to open it up! I was instantly hooked.

You should be warned, listen to the summary, Pax really is an asshole. He does not react to things the way you would want him to react and he will make you crazy. But he is an incredible character. He is deeply flawed and his past is scarred and he doesn’t think he deserves anything good in his life. The thing you really love about Pax is that he knows that he is broken, but he just doesn’t know what to do about it. Meeting Mila is what finally knocks some sense into him.

Oh Mila, I loved this girl. She saw the beautiful in a truly broken person and wanted to help. However, she didn’t get lost in Pax. She remained very much her own person. Pax did not change for her, he changed because of her. Because somebody finally gave a damn about him and finally encouraged him to do what he needed to do. This is what made this story beautiful.

This book is the kind of book that really tugs at the heartstrings. You will become emotionally invested in the characters. I laughed with them and I hurt with them and I loved every single second of it. I think what I loved most about this book is that it never dragged at any point. With books like this, I feel like there is always a tendency to drag out the heartache as long as possible. That didn’t really happen here, the pacing was true to the story.

All in all, I absolutely loved this book and I loved Pax and Mila. I cannot recommend this book enough!

  1. I like the sound of Mila, I think I would pull for her.

  2. I am so happy you loved this, too! Such an epic first page. Great review, Teresa!

  3. I'm so glad you finally read this one! I loved it, too! And you are right, she didn't get lost in Pax, that really made her a strong character. Also loved how you described Pax! Right on!

    Wonderful review!!
