""I’m intrigued. Tempted beyond what I’ve ever been before. To know her, to open her up. To break her."

In love, sometimes what you fear most is exactly what you need.

Laura Drake is" an author. She writes bestselling paranormal romances that continue to top the charts. She is sharp. She is confident. She is in control.

And she doesn’t exist.

Samantha Jansen is the woman behind the wig, the woman most of the world doesn’t know exists. She is shy. She is insecure. She is nothing like her main character or her alter ego. She is scarred—deeply scarred—by a past she can’t let go of and a present she can’t make peace with.

Samantha’s dreams are consumed by one man, the broken hero from her books. Mason Strait is both her wildest fantasy and her most terrifying nightmare.

When Samantha meets Alec Brand, a corporate consultant, it is as though Mason has come to life. Alec is handsome to a fault, as elegant as he is arrogant, and more intense than any man has a right to be.

Samantha is soon sucked into a world that mirrors the fiction she writes. Just like her main character, Daire Kirby, Samantha finds herself unable to resist the forbidden lure of Alec. And just like Daire, she also finds that she is faced with taking a chance on a man who could either set her free or destroy her.

The scale tilts toward destruction when Samantha finds out that Alec is as much a work of fiction as Mason. And he has scars of his own, scars that could ruin them both."

My Thoughts:

I think we all know by now that I am a huge fan of any and all M. Leighton books, so naturally I go into each and every one with extremely high expectations, and every single time I am surprised by how much I fall in love with the story. This book is much darker than her previous books, but something about that made it much more alluring. The characters in this story are very much broken and there may not really be anything that can fix them.

Samantha lives a double life. She is the famous Laura Drake, paranormal fiction author, but nobody knows the real her. Samantha is actually timid and shy and hides behind this persona so nobody can see the broken girl underneath. Samantha had a very rough past; however her past is not something you would guess right away. Her past is pulled away piece by piece and learning these things kept me gripped to the pages almost as much as her relationship with Alec.

Speaking of Alec… holy smokes. Alec is great! He is very intense and intimidating and very much a mystery. As with Samantha, you learn little tidbits about Alec as the story progresses. However, his story takes a bit longer to unfold. Even though you get these tidbits as the story goes on, most of his secrets are dropped on you at one moment. A moment that will leave you going What. The. Hell. I was stunned when all of his demons were revealed and I had to take a moment to go “bravo Miss Leighton, bravo” because she surprised me. I thought I had it, but nope.

One of my favorite things about this novel is the style in which it is written. We get alternating perspectives between Samantha and Alec. However, Samantha’s perspective is what really carries the story. We never get to see too much of Alec at one time. His chapters are generally short. I loved this! Michelle gave us enough to get to know Alec outside of Samantha, but not so much that we were able to learn who he is quickly. By doing this she kept Alec a mystery for a majority of the book even though we got inside his head. I loved watching his story unfold and I loved watching his chapters get longer as the story progressed.

So we all knew this part of the review was coming…. this book was steamy. I would say you are going to need a whole lot of ice cubes once you finish reading, but after you finish this book I doubt you will be able to look at ice cubes the same way ever again. Michelle knows how to deliver the schmexy and steamy goodness, however the steamy quality to this one is very different from her other contemporaries. I felt like this book was very much about anticipation. There was so much buildup in this book and so many times where you are just left wanting more. The book keeps building the anticipation until you are pretty sure you will break (haha) and then oh boy does it ever deliver. It delivers in such a beautiful way. Personally, I think the buildup of this anticipation is what makes the story so hott. Yes hott with a double t, it deserves the extra letter.

Until I Break is a fantastic read and one I just want to put in the hands of each and every person I know! If you like dark and twisted romances then you need to go out and get this book. I doubt you will be disappointed. The story is addictive and consuming from beginning to end!
