"When college student Rena Collins finds herself nose-to-chest with the campus outcast, her rumor-laced notions are shattered. Handsome, considerate, and seemingly sane, Wallace Blake doesn’t look like he spends his nights alone, screaming and banging on the walls of his dorm room. Hell, he doesn’t look like he spends his nights alone, period.

Too curious for her own good, Rena vows to uncover the truth behind Wallace’s madman reputation--and how two seconds of contact had left her with bruises. Of course, there are a few setbacks along the way: guilt, admiration, feelings of the warm and fuzzy variety…

Not to mention the unwanted attention of Wallace's powerful, supernaturally-gifted family.

They’re a bloodline divided by opposing ideals, two soon-to-be warring factions that live in secret among us. When Rena ends up caught in their crossfire, Wallace has no choice but to save her by using his powers. Now they’re really in trouble. With war on the horizon and Rena’s life in the balance, he needs to put some distance between them. But Rena won’t let go. If fighting is what it takes to prove her own strength and keep Wallace in her life, then that’s what she’ll do--even if it means risking a whole lot more than her heart."

My Thoughts:

It is no secret that I have taken a real liking to the New Adult genre, mostly because the characters are around my age. That being said, with the exception of the Providence trilogy by Jamie McGuire, all the New Adult books I have read have been heartbreaking emotional contemporaries. When I got the review request for Strength, a paranormal New Adult, I knew right away that I wanted to give this book a shot. I love a good paranormal book, so throw some new adult characters into the mix and we have a winner.

Not only was the book paranormal, but it was a different type of paranormal. I have never encountered this type of supernatural being before and that made the book even more enjoyable for me. I liked that I didn’t know what was going on immediately and that I got to guess along with the characters.

Rena, our heroine, is a feisty one. She is the kind of character that knows when she is wrong and she is willing to own up to it. She has her faults, but don’t we all. At times she was a meddler, which really annoyed me at one point, but in the end she always did what she felt was right.

Then we have Wallace, who is all sorts of schmexy. I really liked reading about his character. He was a great mix of gentleman, tortured, mysterious, sweetheart, and protective. He is very easy to love and gosh the picture I have of him in my head is just gorgeous!

I feel it necessary to mention Cole in this review. While he doesn’t make the best first impression, I can kinda sorta almost get why he did what he did. I don’t really forgive him, but I can see it. As the book progressed I warmed up to him a bit because he is just too damn funny. Then we have Gabby, Rena’s BFF and roomie, and I wasn’t a big fan of her. She was too “in your face” for me. To me, at times she didn’t come off as a very considerate friend.

Like I said, I really enjoyed this book. It had just the right mix of romance and action and mystery. The story moves along at a good pace and it kept me turning pages. It was definitely a book where I repeatedly said to myself “just one more chapter.” The only thing I didn’t like was teeny tiny. As an accountant, I couldn’t help but take this a bit personal. At one point that author included that accountants don’t have much human interaction. I’m sorry, but all I do all day is interact with people for numerous reasons, so yeah we accountants do have human interaction. But I digress, I took this more personally that I probably should have, I just don’t like the stereotypes.

Overall Strength was a great read and I would definitely recommend it to someone who is a paranormal fan. It is a fun read with likable characters and a nearly impossible romance you cannot help but root for.

  5. This was an interesting one for me, too! I haven't finished it yet, as I had to put in on hold for a few last minute tour reads, but with the exception of a few points (not accounting, but I can see how you'd take offense to that) I'm mostly enjoying it. Great review, Honey!
P.S. I totally miss you, too! I can't seem to find enough time to swing by and comment as often as I'd like but I'm working on changing that! Big, big Love to you, my sweet!
