"Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex.

Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.

The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.

Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself."

My Thoughts:

I really did not think it was possible for me to love this series any more, but Jennifer L. Armentrout has proven me wrong once again! I know I said that Deity was the best book in the Covenant series, but that was before I read Apollyon. Apollyon is the best book in this series and it is the best by a long shot. Everything in the series is beginning to come to a head and boy oh boy does this book pack some punches. I was easily lost in this world for hours on end and I do not regret a minute of it. There were a lot of things I should have been doing, but reading Apollyon was just much more important. Apollyon left me with some emotional scars.

Alex, there is a lot I want to say about her, but there is only so much I can say while keeping this a spoiler free review. Anyone who read Deity knows that Alex has an uphill battle placed in front of her at the conclusion and it is a battle that you are not completely sure she can win, no matter how strong she is. So here is what I can say: Alex is different in Apollyon. She is no longer the same naïve, impulsive girl we met in Half Blood, doesn’t mean I love her any less, but I just wanted to acknowledge this change. How she has changed, well I’m not gonna go there.

Now would this be a review from me if I did not fangirl all over the place about Aiden St. Delphi? The answer to that is no, the review would just not be complete. Aiden continues to be one of my all time favorite book boyfriends. Jennifer really knows how to write a guy that a girl can easily fall head over heels in love with. Aiden is probably as close to perfect as a character can get and I really cannot think of one thing about him I dislike. He always knows the right thing to say and his devotion to Alex never wavers. He is willing to save her from anything, even when he is saving her from herself. The events in this book go above and beyond to show how devoted Aiden really is.

Another character that I must take a moment to mention is Deacon. I could not get enough of him in this book! He had impeccable timing and he always had something inappropriate to say. Deacon had me laughing out loud on numerous occasions, even when the situation was bleak; Deacon always made me feel better and lightened the mood.

My absolute favorite thing about Apollyon is that the Greek mythology aspect was much more prevalent. The mythology that this whole series is based on comes to the forefront and the gods begin to take a bigger role in the action. I am a sucker for Greek mythology so I loved that we got to see so much more of it throughout the story.

Like I said previously, this book packs some serious punches. As with most of her books, I could not figure out what was going to happen. With a lot of books I can guess part of the outcome but not with Jennifer’s books. I never stop reading long enough to try and figure it out, I just keep reading until I get my answers. I get so caught up in the world that I don’t even try to guess I just enjoy. Although I did have one striking moment of clarity towards the end that literally made me scream out loud and freak out, but it occurred when I was supposed to figure out the answer and not before. We finally get some answers and one of those answers is a BIG one that I am sure a lot of people are dying to know. The ending to Apollyon is not nearly as bad as Deity. There is closure for the most part, of course there are items left open for Sentinel, but it is not the killer that Deity was. That does not mean the wait for Sentinel will be any more bearable. I really don’t know how I plan to pass the time until December. Does anyone have a time machine they would be willing to share? I promise only to use it for good and not evil!

Apollyon was everything I knew it would be, but it still managed to leave me breathless. It will make you swoon, laugh, cry, die a little bit on the inside, and it will leave you dying to know how Alex’s story will play out. Apollyon is the definition of an addictive read, one you will have no choice but to finish once you begin.

  2. I read Half Blood and managed to get 1/2 through Pure, but the series had too many similarities to the early Vampire Academy books, for me. I know soooo many who love the series hardcore. I'm so happy Appolyon was such a hit w/you.
    Great review!

    1. I had that issue with Half Blood too, especially since I read VA very close to HB. But as I continued the series I just fell in love.

  3. I just love JLA so much! This series has turned in to my favorite YA series! (I consider HP middle grade) I still think Deity was the best so far, but Apollyon was right behind it! So awesome.

  5. Yes! I loved this book so much, I can't get enough of this series! Oh, Aiden! My favorite always & forever! Deacon is freaking awesome too and I love his moments. And yes, the myth that Jen weaves into this book, all of them rather, is freaking amazing and I can't get enough. Sigh, even though it wasn't a cliffhanger, I'm still dying to read Sentinel and see how it all ends. Great review!
