Blog Tour: Release by: M.R. Merrick (Review, Character Interview, and Giveaway)

Welcome to my stop on the Release Blog Tour hosted by Stuck In Books. For my stop I have a review of Release, a character interview, and there is a giveaway at the bottom. Enjoy!

Release Date: December 8, 2012
Goodreads | Amazon | B&N
Source: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

"After uniting the shifters and calling in reinforcements, Chase has to face his toughest challenge yet: learning to control his emotions. But as tensions rise and his powers grow, controlling his emotions becomes the least of his problems.

Terrorized by a multi-shifter who is hell-bent on turning him, Chase questions just how far he’s willing to go to stop his father. Meanwhile, Tiki’s virtuous nature has placed him in the middle of Vincent’s past, leaving Chase to oppose a senate of vampires and defend a demon he hates.

Trying to balance his friends, his enemies, and his inner demons, Chase is left searching for answers about the Mark, his destiny, and where he can find the next soul piece. Stopping Riley is his top priority, but as more obstacles arise, he finds himself doubting all the decisions he’s made - especially regarding Rayna.

One thing is for certain: Chase has finally realized that he doesn’t know anything. The light doesn’t always quell the darkness, the monsters don’t always stay in the shadows, and the past doesn’t always stay in the past - sometimes, the demons inside are the hardest to fight."

My Thoughts:

Exiled was good, Shift was great, but Release was even better. I don’t know how, but M.R. Merrick has outdone himself yet again. It seems that each book in this series just gets better and better. I am thoroughly enjoying taking this journey with Chase.

Chase has come a very long way since Exiled. When we first meet him, he is a bit whiny and always wondering why bad things happen to him; almost as if bad things never happen to anyone else. Now though, Chase is strong and fierce and ready to accept responsibility for his actions. That being said, I do think he is too harsh on himself at times. He blames himself for everything and I think he needs to start letting other people accept blame for their actions as well. It is not simply his fault alone; it is really a combination of events. However, with the events that transpired in this book I do not see Chase letting go of the self-blame any time soon.

Rayna continues to be my favorite character in the books and the fact that her presence is significantly less in Release in comparison to previous books was a bit of a drawback for me. I missed her personality and I would have liked to have seen more of her. I understand why she was gone and it was interesting to see how much Chase really has come to rely on her, but I still missed her nonetheless.

One character that we did see a lot more of in Release was Grams and I absolutely loved that. She has such a commanding presence and she steals every single scene she is in. I really enjoyed learning more about her character. Also I loved all the insults she dished out constantly.

If you read my reviews for Exiled and Shift, you know that I like Vincent, a lot, in a really weird way. Well that continued in this book. I just love his egotistical personality. Don’t get me wrong, he drives me nuts at points, but I also enjoy watching Chase put him in his place. Also, we see a different side of Vincent in Release, and well it was refreshing.

The plot in Release finally starts to give us some answers. Granted, not nearly as many answers as I would like, but hey it’s a start. It is finally clear where the story is going and everything is set up nicely for a final showdown. The other shoe has dropped so to speak.

I am really loving this urban fantasy world that Merrick has created. It is so different and refreshing and I can always vividly imagine it. I have no problem believing that it takes place in the here and now, despite it being clearly fantastical.

All in all, Release is a great continuation of this series and if you have not started this series yet, I recommend you do so soon. I am really looking forward to what is in store for Chase next, especially with that killer ending.

Character Interview:

As part of the blog tour I had the pleasure to interview Grams and get to know her better, well kinda. She has some really great answers and some simply made me laugh out loud. Enjoy!

Hi Grams. Thanks for taking the time to stop by today and answer a few questions.
Yeah, cause I’ve got boatloads of time. *takes drag off of cigarette* Look at me, the skin on my elbow is practically dragging on the floor.

So I always start my interviews off with this question and this one is no exception. If you had to describe yourself in two words, what would they be and why?
I’m sexy and I know it. That’s more than two. Sue me.

Despite your commanding presence, I feel as if the reader does not know you very well, so what can you tell us about yourself that we wouldn’t know from reading the books?
I like long walks down dark alleys, and second hand smoke pisses me off. *snorts* Oh you’re serious? Okay then…I didn’t know I was a witch until I was in my late teens. I grew up in an orphanage of sorts, and when my powers came about, I got kicked out. I lived on the streets for nearly two years before the coven took me in.

Now I have to know, what are your true feelings regarding Chase? Do you really dislike him as much as it seems?
Dislike him? What’s not to like? He’s stupid, arrogant, and selfish. My kinda guy. And if he gets his head on straight one of these days, he just might make it through all this without getting us all killed.

How about Rayna? Personally she is my favorite so I feel it necessary to gather everyone’s opinion on her.
The kitty? She’s alright, I guess. Probably the only one who can talk any sense into Chase. Girl reminds me of myself once upon a time. She’ll be alright.

How are you dealing with the recent changes in Willy? Do you think they will be good for him in the long run?
The Shadowpack will be good for him. They’ll teach him what I’ve struggled to do his whole life—to stand up for himself. That or it’ll get him killed…

Now it is time for the tacky question, which I am sure you will poison me for. How old are you really? I get the feeling you are much older than you seem.
Old? What do you mean old? These hips can still move with the best of ‘em. Lemme just say my training bra was as tight as an eagle’s asshole in a nosedive when Lincoln got shot.

This or that:
Day or Night? Lunch
Sweet or Sour? Meatballs
Summer or Winter? Winter
Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones? Neither. Little people scare me.

Thanks for stopping by today! It was great having you.
The pleasure is all your’s. *grins*
