"Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family.

She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own."

My Thoughts:

THIS BOOK! Those were the two words I kept repeating after I finished Splintered. I was kinda at a loss for words. I love Alice in Wonderland, so I was immediately drawn to this story months ago, plus the book has an incredible cover! Then I kept seeing great early reviews for this book and I just got more and more excited to read it. With my expectations pretty much through the roof, Splintered still managed to blow me away. I just ate up all the chaos and wonder that is Splintered.

Alyssa, our main gal and great great great granddaughter of the original Alice, was an awesome heroine. I loved her skater style and punk attitude. She is not the normal pretty girl heroine and I love her all the more because of it. Alyssa lives by her own rules and she has a tendency towards recklessness. She is also a very strong character who knows how to handle herself.

Then we have Jeb, who from what I have seen so far is the frontrunner. Jeb is a bit of a conundrum for me. I loved him, but then I would get incredibly frustrated with him. I felt as if he held Alyssa back at some points in his effort to protect her. It is clear he loves Alyssa, but I think he took it too far at points and acted as if she wasn’t capable of taking care of herself. Then again, there were moments from him that just melted my heart.

Now the counterpart to Jeb is Morpheus and I absolutely head over heels loved Morpheus. I think I should just let him describe himself: “Mysterious. Rebellious. Troubled. All those qualities women find irresistible.” And boy oh boy did I find him irresistible. I mean how could I not; blue hair, wicked masquerade markings, a devilish suit, leather pants, and a top hat made of moths, how was I ever supposed to resist? Now this made me question my sanity a bit because Morpheus really isn’t the smart choice. He is Wonderland through and through; which means danger, manipulation, chaos, and madness. But at the same time he is incredibly charming and underneath it all he really is a good guy. He may have questionable intentions, but when it matters most he comes through. Plus we can’t forget the dark sarcasm and wit. Alyssa can keep Jeb, I’ll take Morpheus.

Moving on to the love triangle. I am the first to admit that love triangles have the tendency to drive me nuts, but that wasn’t the case here. This was a love triangle I could enjoy because I was just as torn as Alyssa was at times. It was easy to see why she was torn and in all honesty it wasn’t overly prominent. I think it is clear from the get go who Alyssa is going to choose.

Aside from the characters, the world and plot in Splintered is fantastic. The world created is just spectacular. Splintered takes everything you thought you knew about Wonderland and twists it. I was able to vividly imagine the world and easily get lost in the story. I know pretty much every review for this book says this, but I will repeat it. The world building in Splintered is superb.

As I said, the plot is also fantastic. I was taken completely by surprise. The twist at the end is one I honestly never saw coming, didn’t even think to question it really. I was totally blindsided and I loved it. Some may say that the plot is a bit chaotic, and honestly it is, but what better way for the plot in a Wonderland inspired story to be. It doesn’t follow a straight line with easy connect the dots; it is more of a maze where the floor can fall out at any moment and descend into madness.

All in all, Splintered was a great Alice in Wonderland twist. Fans of the original Alice are sure to love this book and even those who are not fans of Alice will be able to enjoy Splintered. And did I mention Morpheus? Well I’m gonna mention him again. Morpheus. Morpheus. Morpheus. This book left me saying “Thank you, may I have another?”
