Character Spotlight: Will Cooper

So I know I have not had a character spotlight in a while, but there was some other stuff going on and I could not pick who I wanted to do next. I finally decided to do Will Cooper from the Slammed books by Colleen Hoover because 1) I love him and 2) I realized I had never done a contemporary character before. So here it goes and as with most of my character spotlights, there may be some spoilers.

When I first met Will Cooper in Slammed, my first thought was "Ugh! Another character named Will! He has a lot of awesome competition" because as hard as I try I always compare characters with the same name. So I immediately began holding him up against the likes of Will Herondale from The Infernal Devices, Will from the Angelfire Series, and Will from the Firelight Series (all Will's that I am head over heels in love with.) It goes without saying that Will Cooper had a lot to live up to. As I turned page after page, it soon became clear that not only did Will Cooper live up to the other Will's but in some ways he was even better!

Will is incredibly easy to fall in love with. He is sweet, determined, funny, intelligent, and responsible. After dealing with the death of both his parents, he begins taking care of his younger brothers and while he is young he still manages to make it work. Not only does he embody all of these characteristics, but he also writes and performs slam poetry. I mean, could he get any better? Well yes he does. He is also incredibly romantic. He is willing to go above and beyond for Layken, even when things are not easy.

Layken and Will have an immediate attraction to each other, but when they learn that Will is actually her teacher, things become a bit difficult (to say the least.) Will tries to do the right thing and stay away, but when tragedy strikes Layken, she needs Will more than ever and he is there for her regardless of the consequences. By the end of Slammed, it is clear that their relationship is worth it and they make it work. Then we get to Point of Retreat, and my gosh, it is written from Will's point of view. Do you know how much I LOVED getting inside his head. In this book Will's romantic side really shows. It becomes clear how much he truly loves Layken and he shows it in the sweetest way imaginable.

Another reason Will is lovable is because he is realistic. There is nothing special about him; he isn't a vampire, angel, alien, or whatever. He is simply a really sweet and really great guy. In my opinion, that makes him ten times better than most other characters out there.

Favorite Will Quotes:

"She loves me. She just doesn't like me right now." -Point of Retreat

"I'm telling you to marry me, Lake... because I can't live without you." -Point of Retreat

“My heart pounds against my chest. Not because I'm nervous. Not even because I want her worse that I've ever wanted her before. It's pounding against my chest because I realize I've never been so sure about the rest of my life than I am in this moment. This girl is the rest of my life.” -Point of Retreat

Well, you would realize...

Like I eventually realized...
That all the good things about her?
All the beautiful?
It's not real.
It's fake.

So you keep your ocean,
I'll take the Lake.” -Slammed

"Life knows.
Life is trying to tell me
That the girl I love,
The girl I fell
So hard for?
There's room for her in first.
I'm putting her first.” -Slammed

"I love you, Lake...You deserve to come first." -Slammed
