Character Spotlight: Kaylee Cavanaugh

Since I have a lot of male character spotlights, I wanted to focus again this week on another awesome heroine. That led me to Kaylee Cavanaugh of the Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent.
There are spoilers!

Kaylee Cavanaugh is one of my all time favorite heroines. She ranks up with the likes of Katy Swartz, Clary Fray, and Tris Prior. Kaylee is the kind of character that is incredibly strong, not necessarily in the I can kick your butt sense (although she probably can) but more in the I will always do what I think is right sense. Kaylee is always willing to lend a hand to those she loves and even to those she does not even know. She will always help a friend in need and she is capable of making incredibly tough choices. While she is not perfect, and does make mistakes, she never has malicious intent (unless you are her enemy.)

The moment where I realized how strong Kaylee is, came during the third book. When she discovers that Nash is addicted to frost and has been lying to her, she doesn’t just brush it off. While it hurts, she realizes that they cannot be together after this and that they need time apart. This was not the easy choice, but it was the right one. They needed to see if they could learn to trust each other again before they dove back into a relationship. I really admired her for this decision, because I feel like a lot of other YA heroines would have immediately tried to look past his addiction and try to justify it, whereas Kaylee looked at it for what it was.

Another thing I love is that Kaylee has a backbone and there is nobody who brings out this side of her better than Sabine. Until Sabine showed up, Kaylee always came across as strong, but it was always against truly evil characters like Avari. Sabine on the other hand was just another girl (well a nightmarish one) who was interested in Nash. Sabine is willing to do anything for Nash and that is not something Kaylee likes to see and well it makes her a bit snarky. It also shows that she is willing to fight for what she wants.

Kaylee once again shows her true nature when she is brought back to help reclaim stolen souls. In return she does not make outlandish demands for herself, but for others. She wants Nash to be able to live a normal life and she simply wants Tod back (okay that one is semi-selfish), but still. It is clear she cares more about others than she does about herself. If you know me, well then you know that I love Tod. So it is necessary for me to mention Tod and Kaylee’s relationship because I LOVE IT. They are one of my favorite fictional couples. They are great together and truly bring out the best in each other. They are exactly what each other needs in order to stay sane after death.

So I will stop here and spare you any more of my ramblings, and believe me I have a lot of them, but I think I should let Tod sum up Kaylee for us.

“There's a good kind of crazy, Kaylee," he insisted softly, reaching out to wrap his warm hand around mine. "It's the kind that makes you think about things that make your head hurt, because not thinking about them is the coward's way out. The kind that makes you touch people who bruise your soul, just because they need to be touched. This is the kind of crazy that lets you stare out into the darkness and rage at eternity, while it stares back at you, ready to swallow you whole."

Tod leaned closer, staring into my eyes so intently I was sure he could see everything I was thinking, but too afraid to say. "I've seen you fight, Kaylee. I've seen you step into that darkness for someone else, then claw your way out, bruised, but still standing. You're that kind of crazy, and I live in that darkness. Together, we'd take crazy to a whole new level.”

Favorite Kaylee Quotes:
“Chocolate says "I'm sorry" so much better than words.” – My Soul To Save

“I got swirling eyes and the capacity to shatter windows with my bare voice. Tod got teleportation and invisibility. The supernatural world is so far from fair.” – My Soul To Keep

“I wanted more firsts with Tod. But all I had left was a handful of lasts.” – If I  Die

“But more than any of that, I was thankful for the possibility he'd shown me: that a man really could love a woman enough that he'd do anything to protect her. That's how much Tod loved Addy. That's how much I wanted Nash to love me.” – My Soul To Keep

“Alec rolled beautiful brown eyes. ‘No fair playing the death card.’ ‘No fair having it to play.’” – If I Die
