"The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate percentage of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance between her and the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University's Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs—and wants—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match."

My Thoughts:

So it seems that this book is either a “love it” or “hate it” kind of book. I read so many terrible reviews knocking the relationship because of "abuse." I was expecting Travis to be very unlikable, and honestly I was expecting the relationship to be a lot worse than it was. Along with all of the negative reviews, I also saw a lot of really great reviews for Beautiful Disaster. In this case, I am going to have to agree with the great review people, because I loved every single second of Beautiful Disaster. I stayed up all night reading this book, and I do not regret an ounce of the sleep I lost.

The relationship between Abby and Travis really is a beautiful disaster. Both of the characters have rough pasts and have issues because of that past. While it makes their relationship crazy at times, it also makes them perfect for each other. They understand each other in a way that no one else can. Their issues and past make them better for each other. Their relationship reminds me of a hurricane, but in a good way.

I have seen a lot of bad talk out there about Travis, but I honestly thought he was more desperate than anything. Does he get jealous and controlling? Yes. Does he do this simply to control Abby? No. He acts the way he does because he is desperate, not just because he simply wants to control her. That does not make the way he acted okay, but it also makes it understandable. Travis was in love with Abby and was willing to do anything to be with her. He was not perfect and made mistakes, but I thought he always had Abby’s best interest at heart.

Honestly I thought that Abby was worse than Travis. She messed with Travis’ head for the majority of the book. She would break up with him, but then get mad at him for being with other girls. She jerked him back and forth for a lot of the book and that wasn’t very fair to him. She wasn’t doing this intentionally, she had her reasons, but she still hurt him a lot. My point is that Abby and Travis both behaved crazy because they loved each other.

Travis and Abby do not have the healthiest relationship in the world, but they try to make it work. They are simply making the best with the cards they were dealt. In real life would I put up with Travis? No. However, this is a book and I enjoyed the story. I enjoyed watching Travis and Abby work through their respective issues and try to makes things work. I loved the happy moments and hated the sad, but together I just loved it all. I completely understand why some people do not like this book; it is not a book for everyone. However, I really enjoyed it.

Beautiful Disaster is a beautifully written story that tugs at your heartstrings. It will make your heart hurt and then have you smiling like a little kid. Travis and Abby have some incredibly sweet moments, but they also have some heartbreaking ones. I loved that the relationship was built on friendship. At the core of everything between Abby and Travis, they are simply best friends. I think some of my favorite moments came when they were just goofing off as friends. They really know everything about each other and that is because they are not just a couple but each other’s best friend. Also, I simply loved that Travis called Abby Pigeon or Pidge. I don’t really know why I loved it; I simply thought it was funny. It made me think of Lady and the Tramp, and I am a Disney fanatic.

All in all, I am a huge fan of Beautiful Disaster. It has skyrocketed its way on to my favorite’s shelf. I have yet to be disappointed by anything Jamie McGuire has written and I am eagerly anticipating Walking Disaster.

I thought it was an amazing raw and real contemporary read with a dark edge.
And I never thought about it, but you are right, it is like Lady and the Tramp!

Like you stated, this isn't a book for everyone.

  6. Great review! I'm probably in the majority of people who didn't end up enjoying the book. The first 100 odd pages, sure, but then everything just got so repetitive and Travis - and Abby just annoyed me to hell and back!
