"Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.
Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha…and the secrets of her heart."

My Thoughts:

When I picked up Shadow and Bone I honestly had no idea what I was getting into. I hadn't even read the summary; I just really liked the title, so I just picked it up. Not knowing anything about the book made for an interesting and surprising journey. I truly enjoyed getting lost in this fantasy world.

Alina Starkov is the perfect heroine. She starts off as a meek and scared little girl, only to really grow into someone to reckon with. She is not perfect, she has her flaws and makes her mistakes, however she is genuinely likable and you will root for her. She is the kind of heroine girls can relate to, because everyone at some point feels like they don't belong.

The character that intrigued me the most was The Darkling, yes that is his name. He is dark but charming, and you never really know what he is going to do next. You want to be afraid of him, but at the same time you are inexplicably drawn to him. He keeps the reader guessing and will confuse you from beginning to end.

The love story involved is really very sweet and will make you swoon. It is the kind of romance that will make you smile despite the bleak circumstances. It isn't the driving force of the novel, but it does play a significant role. I kinda wish that it was more forefront, because I truly enjoyed it.

Shadow and Bone takes everything that is good about fantasy and makes it better. It has magic and strange lands that you kinda want to visit, but it also has the strange lands that you are fine not having in this world. My one reservation was the strange words and names. Some were very hard to pronounce and would cause me to stumble in my reading. However I did get used to it and the story distracted me from the unknown words. I really wish we had learned more about the Grisha and exactly what they can do and where they came from. I would have liked more of a basis for them, but maybe I will learn more in later books.

Overall Shadow and Bone is the perfect book for fans of fantasy. If you read books like Lord of the Rings and the Inheritance Cycle then this is the book for you.
